Ethereal Plane

The afterlife in Rove is not usually tied to religion. The Wardens of Virtue don't have much to do with the afterlife, and some people have already died and returned thanks to necromantic powers. When someone dies, their soul separates from their body and moves freely within the Ethereal Plane for a short time. During this time, resurrection is the easiest, and their souls can be bound to the Material Plane by Soul Readers.   However, after a matter of hours, these souls are condensed into small crystals, called Soul Shards. These crystals contain the code for a soul, but they cease to experience anything. It is believed that they are immune to the effects of time altogether. Soul Shards are only understood because some people, shortly after having died themselves, have seen the process of a soul shattering and condensing into the crystal.   Soul Shards seem to last forever, and are impossible to break with the power one has while inside the Ethereal Plane. They shape the geography of the Ethereal Plane, as they are the only “physical” things that exist, aside from the few wandering souls. They tend to cluster around each other with their own version of gravity. They also are tethered to the original place they were formed. When soul shards come into contact with another, they become inseparable within the Ethereal Plane. The result of these forces is that there are large clusters of crystals around populated locations in the Material Plane, or places were a great number of people died. For civilizations lost to time, sometimes the crystal clusters are the last remaining evidence that they ever existed.
