Bulette, Landshark

The great beast, covered in armor. You wouldn't have believed it, was angrier than the meanest boar. Our clansmen were right to believe it a devil.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Bearing resemblence to a number of creatures, bulettes set the standard for landsharks counting as monstrosities. Underneath the shell, they appear to have an acute mixture, having a giant toads head, a massive sharp toothed toad maw, with a rhinos body and limbs, followed by what can only be described as having four legs all of which end in large bear-like paws with long extremely sturdy claws that double as both picks and shovels individually. Along with these, they share similiarities to armadillos, having it's entire and especially upper exterior covered in segmented bones known as shells, used aptly for protection. A monster in all rights.

Genetics and Reproduction

Bulettes, being the creatures they are, naturally live in a raw climate, one where finding another of their kind can go without happening for weeks at a time across the higher depths of the Great Maze. As this is, male and female bulettes mate whenever possible, whenever adults encounter one another. In times of greater bulette populations, which comes every decade or so, they migrate outwards from the central Urselon caverns. Female's then leave the make and gestate for roughly 7 months before moving her clutch of eggs to a special pouch in the underbelly, which remain there for 3 months. From there, the clutch, often numbering between 2 and 4 eggs, hatch and immediately are released from the pouch.

Growth Rate & Stages

Bulettes take 3 years to grow from hatchlings to a young adult. During their hatchling stage, their exterior shells are softer and more malleable than when they are older. As they grow older, growing larger, their shells gradually harden and thicken. This continues all through their life, becoming a detriment in their later years as they become heavier and thus, the bulettes become less agile due not only from their age but from their shells too. Bulettes can live upwards to 60 years, perhaps even longer according to some.

Ecology and Habitats

Urselom

Living an ever shifting Realm, bulettes are well equipped to deal with this, tunneling through miles of even soft limestone and dirt, breaking it away with relative ease with their large extremely hard and powerful claws. Bulettes hold a place among Urselon's more common, almost apex predators, merely falling under greater creatures such as worms and primordial oozes.

Materium

In the Realm of natural species, bulettes are a scourge upon both normal creatures of the wild and small communities. It is when they arrive, sometimes in great number, that they are well despised. Few creatures are safe from these carnivorous and ill tempered monsters, and fewer can challenge them in this non native land.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Bulettes are carnivorous, and not picky of what they eat. Thriving well off an ample food supply, they eat whatever they come across that resembles flesh and bone, living or rotten. It is because of this that they are scourges upon the Materium and potentially problematic in Urselon, that they eat so much and contribute so little in the grand scheme.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Urselon

Found all across the endless great Realm, they are not particularly common unless one decides to try to find trouble. However, they can be better found in the greater wilds and in the higher portions of Urselon where there is softer material to tunnel through.

Materium

Found all across the Materium as well, Bulettes are more rare here however in comparison to Urselon. However, they are picky of where they choose their hunting grounds, and more often choose beaches or fields, especially where prey is easier such as near farming and fishing communities.

Average Intelligence

Bulettes are dull witted creatures, having the intelligence necessary only to understand their surroundings, hunt, kill and reproduce. Though there have been claims of fairly intelligent bullettes, these are the outliers.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Eyesight

Bulette eyesight is well to do. Despite appearing to have beady eyes, their eyes are actually quite large underneath their orbital shell, measuring 4 inches in diameter. Bulette eyes adapt quickly from darkness to light, as their ocular lids open greater in darkness than in light, with the secondary ocular shields preventing dirt and other debris from harming a normally sensitive organ.

Extrasensory

Bulettes, being creatures of the Great Maze, Urselon, require a great deal of unique adaptation the Realm. One example of this is the ability to sense other creatures from afar, despite no sound nor sight from the other organisms. This goes for all manner of walking creatures. This tremorsense goes for nearly 55 feet in all direction, as it appears the veimer nodes on the bottom of their paws are responsible for this. These same nodes can be found all over their bodies, notably their spines, joints and head.

Slayer's Note - Though these creatures can appear to be magical in their tunneling, they are in fact not. As far as it is known, only their tremorsense is potentially magical. Silver is not required to kill landsharks. Take care in tracking one, as they are not easily surprised and kill other creatures for fun. Rather, trapping them through magical means or by leading it to a harder more compact dirt is much better than fighting it on it's terms of soft soil. Whenever possible, attack it's joints, eyes and underbelly, places where there is less if not enough armored bone. The females often pay more than males, especially if eggs can be found on her. Take care, as landsharks prove challenging for even experienced slayers and mercenaries.
