Cybernetics in the Roman Empire

Cybernetics in the modern sense began to be developed within the Empire starting from the XXVI cent. A.U.C. . At the beginning a branch of engineering, it quickly acquired its own autonomy, coming to be divided into two distinct branches: the creation of servomotors to enhance the body's movements and the creation of automata capable of moving independently. If it is true that the creation of workload reduction systems was welcomed by the workers, but that was not the case for slave traders, who saw the new technologies as a threat to their business. Because of their pressure on the government a series of reforms were implemented to limit the use of automata that will lead the Roman Empire to lag behind its enemies for almost two centuries and which will then be modified or canceled later. However, even while the most restrictive laws regarding the research and use of these new technologies were in force, a part of Roman society continued to study them carefully: the armed forces. In an enormous effort to mutually surpass each other the forces of land, air and sea opened specialized laboratories, with the help of universities and private companies. This led to both the creation of enhanced armor, equipped with servomotors capable of enhancing the wearer's movements and newly designed war drones. However this rendered the position of the armed forces rather unstable, in fact on the one hand the members of parliament responsible for the laws saw the non-compliance with the same as a direct challenge, on the other the leaders of the armed forces and their representatives in parliament justified the matter by citing old laws and codes that allowed military experimentation to be conducted in ways differents from civilian experimentation. The situation became so tense as to cause fear of a civil war, and while at the time it didn't happen many historians agree that the hostility between the armed forces and the government caused by this clash helped to ensure that the armed forces strongly supported Empress Ailina Dociarta Caesaris Augusta during her seizure of power.
