The Avatar of Lolth

Lolth has taken a keen interest in maintaining her holdings over the world of Rockfall, but she is finding it difficult with the magiological winter that prevents her from interceding directly from her lair in the Demonweb Pits. With the help of Alakezan himself, Lolth has set up three receiver thrones, one in each of the drow cities within the proximity of his beacon. Powered by a hefty sacrifice of slaves, the throne destroys the personality of a young drow priestess (at least some of which are probably volunteers) and replaces it with that of Lolth’s own. While the Avatar sits on the throne and the synchronization ritual is performed, Lolth and her Avatar are of one mind and soul. The rest of the time, the Avatar is an ordinary drow priestess, with the personality and memories of the Spider Queen herself, if not her actual power. The Avatar is a hateful and paranoid being, addicted to the power and invulnerability of synchronization with her true self, and demands that the drow around her perform the ritual as frequently as they are able. The ritual is hard on the body of the Avatar, and every few years the Avatar must replace her body with that of a new young priestess, still fresh and full of vitality. Ironically, Lolth hates the act of synchronizing with her Avatar, as she experiences the fear and vulnerability of her memories since their last merging. Nonetheless, Lolth sees her Avatar as a necessary discomfort to maintaining her control of Rockfall’s Underdark. Lolth’s Avatar is treated as a sort of Pope figure by the drow as she travels between the three drow throne cities and the drow district of Alakezan's Beacon, relaying Lolth’s direct will, all the while protected by an elite force of all female drow bodyguards.   Lolth despises Alakezan and suspects him (correctly) of throttling her connection to her faithful and her Avatar. In turn, Lolth subtly sabotages Alakezan’s ambitions in the Outer Planes, all the while careful to maintain deniability as to not disrupt their working relationship.
