Rivania
5641 A.S.
The towering rivers of ice that carved the fjords in all their majesty whisper today like ghosts in the mountain valleys and foothills of Rivania. Their legacy blankets mountain ranges – their stories still held in the permafrost of the subalpine slopes.
The glaciated landscape gifted by an ice age that lasted more than 450 thousand years was not fated to last forever. A great Shattering of the continent ended in the tragic loss of more than half of the world's landmass, along with an immeasurable number of lives. Civilizations occupying the resulting sub-continents and islands struggled to avoid conflict in the fight for life-sustaining resources.
Five and a half millennia later, the world is in a state of somewhat stable peace, although issues in race relations, resource sequestration, and territorial defense still define the post-Shattering era. Add to that an unexplained gradual warming of the climate and Rivania stares into the dual possibilities of lasting stability or long-term conflict.
What remains of Rivania today is a simulacrum of what once was – a world on the brink of a cataclysm or peace, be it at the hands of nature or its own creatures.
