Wolfback Wilds

At the foot of the eastern side of the Southern Spines sprawls the Wolfback Wilds. This 23,000 square mile mixed coniferous forest is the second largest of Owera's forests, the second only to the Langree Timberlands of the North.

Geography

The Wolfback Wilds stretch between the Eastern Coast and the Southern Spines, usually called the Wolfback Spikes. The city of Hallowind sits on a peninsula to the north and Howling Cove to the south. There are several small towns and villages scattered along the coast and camps in the forest.   There have been several depictions, both in word and visual media, of the forest looking as if made of fire during the fall as the sun sets.

Fauna & Flora

Notable animals that inhabit this forest frequently seen by visitors include black bear, coyote, bobcat, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, gray squirrel, muskrat, quail, opossum, ruffed grouse, rabbit, red and gray fox species, raccoon and mourning dove. Other species include the woodchuck, red-cockaded woodpecker, mink, bald eagle, and a variety of bats. Fish species include rainbow trout, large and small mouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and muskie.   Typical trees include sugar maple, beech, poplar, basswood, red oak, and black walnut. Other trees found here are hemlock, white ash, sweet gum, and yellow buckeye.

Natural Resources

The predominance of hardwood makes the Wilds a prime logging location. Most lumber is hauled out to the coast and then transported by ship down the coast to Howling Cove; from there is it shipped out to various locations and buyers.   Ground vegetation is a bounty for herbalists and druids. There are few species of mushroom and greenery that are only found in these woods and are used to make higher value concoctions.
