Adventurer

How many adventurers does it take to slay a goblin?   A hundred. One to do the slaying and 99 to check if the body has anything of value.
A largely varied profession that can range from an explorer looking to wander the world, to a greedy individual looking to make a few quick coins, to a person with insatiable blood lust and a knack for killing. Adventurers come in all shapes and sizes each with their own reason for choosing the job. One thing that is clear is that this is no mundane job for any ordinary joe. It is a job for the more eccentric, crazed, adventurous and fearless types.

Career

Qualifications

The unfortunate truth is that practically anyone is 'qualified' to be an adventurer. That's also where the large mortality rate for adventurers comes from - many inexperienced and overconfident individuals thinking they can earn quick coin by doing some simple battle when in fact even easy tasks such as killing rabid rats can turn dire. Most of the actually capable and working adventurers usually have some sort of background that has made them strong enough to survive as an adventurer such as being a former soldier, gladiator, wizard's apprentice and so on. Even with that there are individuals who come in completely fresh never having lifted a weapon and purely off of their adventuring experience turn into proper, capable adventurers.

Career Progression

Adventurers often don't have specific ranks to advance through and their advancement purely relies on their reputation. How well they are known. Some adventurer guilds do exist in which ranks are a real thing that often is measured by the number of successful tasks, the difficulty of tasks and other such conditions.

Payment & Reimbursement

Adventurers are folk to be commissioned which means that their pay varies depending on their task. A classic small job to take care of a few rats can get you a few silvers where's a job to go and slay the dragon that has been terrorizing the nearby town can get you thousands of gold.

Other Benefits

Adventurers don't get many benefits, especially if they are not well known. If anything their life is a bit tougher, what with all the suspicious stares, dirty looks and even sometimes real restrictions placed on them, such as not being allowed to carry their weapons into some establishments.

Perception

Purpose

Adventurers do the dirty work for many more wealthy individuals and even for common folk who cannot defend themselves. They keep businesses afloat that can attract trouble such as travelling merchants or just a very unlucky librarian who just had to have a cursed book in his library. They defend the many civilizations from the outside, slaying monsters and stopping evil forces such as cults that could wreak havoc on the common folk.

Social Status

The social status of an adventurer depends on their renown. Most adventurers though are at the bottom of the barrel being seen as just expendable handymen. Those that are capable and use their bounties for becoming lords of castles and such do become of higher renown amongst the wealthy and noble.
