Southern Pagfowl
The Southern Pagfowl.
Sometimes known as the Pack Raven or even the Toilbird, this animal is widely regarded as one of the strongest alternatives to Oxen, Ponies or other working animals. This species of bird-like creature originated in the country of Pagrad and is believed to be a descendant of an unknown dragon-like species that lived millions of years ago.
The Southern Pagfowl can grow up to six feet tall and can weigh up to one thousand pounds, but are renowned for their strength and their ability to memorize names, faces and locations that pertain to the work they have been bred and trained to perform from birth. They live up to eighteen to twenty-two years in the wild and are birthed via egg-laying, much like other common species of bird, despite the great distance in size between the average fowl and the Southern Pagfowl.
This species of bird can be trained for a variety of tasks, such as basic metalworking, mail and parcel delivery, farming - of several types of common crops such as corn, wheat, carrots etc. - goods transport - the work of moving carts of goods from one place to another over distances both long and short.
The species is herbivorous in nature, and feeds on large quantities of crops in order to sustain it's needs during a common workday. A common feeding consists of at least three to four buckets of crops such as corn, wheat, carrots, apples or any other fruit or vegetable, and at least two gallons of water in order to fully sustain them for a duration of at least six to ten hours, between which small snacks are often recommended before a small night's meal before the Pagfowl may turn in to sleep for the night before carrying on in the morning. If they are working a night shift, the time at which the large meal and snacks are given reverses.
The Southern Pagfowl is well adapted to multiple climates across the world, and variations of this species can be found on many different continents, fulfilling the same task of moving goods and wares to and fro without complaint or delay. Given a time frame with which to deliver the goods in their charge, the Pagfowl is known to be very timely in it's delivery in order to fulfill it's duties to the best caliber, but this doesn't mean they are perfect by any means. When encountering storms or other delays, they are known to take prolonged shelter before moving on, but because they cannot speak, they have no way of properly communicating their issues to their masters and employers. The nature of these birds and their tendencies are respected by their employers however, and a late arrival can almost always be chalked up to some sort of weather delay or some other issue.
The Southern Pagfowl is also a very defensive bird.
Their only predators are known to be larger fowl who can overpower them, and when such an encounter takes place, the Pagfowl will often defend their goods to the death if need be. They are only territorial surrounding their goods and their masters, and are loyal from the moment of their employment until they are relieved of duty.
They can be found in almost every region or climate of the planet except for the freezing regions of the South and North poles of the planet, as they were not evolved to withstand the sub-zero temperatures that exist all year round. Rethium is thought to be their land of origin from ancient history, but so many millions of years have passed that this claim cannot yet be fully accepted and verified.
They are known to understand the human emotions, despite not being fully capable of displaying emotions of their own, and can understand vocal tones from humans or other races that they commonly interact with. If an individual tends to be angry, displeased and unpleasant towards them, the Pagfowl will distance themselves in order to not be influenced by the emotions of the individual. They will share in pleasant emotions and are known to improve their work ethic due to this, meaning that if they interact with someone who is generally pleasant and happy, their work and their emotions will reflect this.
The longest known lifespan of a Southern Pagfowl was forty years of age, and it died in it's sleep one night after a long and arduous journey that had crossed almost the entire country of Opron, from the city of Dirn in the northeast of Opron and down to the city of Charme.
Pagfowl are born as pack animals, and can be found nesting in grottos and deep, forested valleys when the terrain and geology permits, but they will otherwise gather together in smaller woods and forests if those of larger sizes cannot be found. They have no known method of ranking within their groups, and act as a group when foraging in order to protect themselves from threatening predators while doing so. A common formation during their foraging process consists of at least five Pagfowl searching for food at one time in a wide area, while between five and ten Pagfowl are known to protect the foragers until their collection is complete. This process alone can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day to complete, meaning that the remaining group defends itself - commonly in much denser areas of woods or forests - until the foragers return.
A group of Pagfowl is commonly referred to as a Posse, and can consist of anywhere between twenty-five to thirty-five Pagfowl at one time. Two groups of this species is referred to as a Turnout.
