Cinder Spice

Cinder Spice.
A valuable ingredient in many recipes that provide the world with flavored and nutritious food.
And it is valued for it's taste.
But it is renowned for it's growth and it's necessity.
It is grown in the fields of Pagrad, and is watched by the members of the Amazonian race, Karasu.
Cinder Spice is grown in small plots at a time and can survive extreme heat and high-pressure water as well as the heat of the air during strong and dry summer seasons. When planted, the seeds resemble small bits of coal or ash, which after a period of some five weeks may sprout into between one and three stems of Cinder.
The growth process of Cinder Spice, although considered precious and delicate by the Karasu, but is considered simple yet tedious for others who have been trained to properly grow and sustain the valuable spice.
It is grown primarily in the heat of the summer of every second year, and is rested underneath only a few inches of black soil from the country itself. In order to enrich the flavor of the spice, this soil is often steamed and dried in bunches inside furnaces for around five hours before being spread across a small plot of land in which the seeds will be planted. To keep the dried soil from contacting the richer, cool soil, beds made of wood planks or metal sheets and wrappings are built to contain the dried soil. Laid in rows of ten and kept in the open sun to expose the seeds to as much sunlight as possible, the seeds are not watered by water of regular temperature.
Often, the Karasu who grow the spice are devoted to this task and will live the entire summer keeping the spice growing and healthy. To feed the seeds properly, water is boiled to steaming heat and is spread in at least three buckets' worth across the plots of land in which the spice is grown.
The typical yield of Cinder Spice is around one-hundred to two-hundred Cinders per stalk, which is the most prized amount of the spice to be grown at one time. Many plots of Cinder Spice are planted at the same time however, which increases the amount by a few hundred when the harvest comes. The spice is shipped in it's stalks to be shredded when it arrives at the stores, taverns, diners and other locales where it is used and stored for the use of making food. Anywhere from five-hundred to one-thousand stalks of Cinder Spice are harvested, but if more than one Karasu is employed to grow the spice, this amount can easily double.
To be safely shipped without the risk of the spice cooling too much - which will cause the spice to wither and rot and to become unusable, the stalks are wrapped in bales of heat-soaking fabric and tied with strong coils of rope. The fabric is first steamed in ovens and stretched to increase the surface area during this process, which takes at least ten hours to produce the required texture and heat level within the fabric that will allow the spice to remain perfectly preserved during transport from the Pagrad fields and to it's final destination.
The Karasu are an Amazonian race of Tarris Six and Rethium, and for as long as they have existed it is believed that they have never had contact with a male of any known race in accordance to their reproduction as well as their birth into the mortal world several thousands of years ago in ancient times. It is for this reason that when the harvest comes for the spice, women are sent to retrieve the bales so as to lessen the risk of exposure and possible endangerment for the Karasu race. It had been told that when a male had been sent on one of the first missions to retrieve the Cinder Spice, he had become infatuated with the Karasu and had attempted to remain behind and procreate with them, thus risking the life of those he interacted with. Karasu do not have a proper reproductive system to accommodate male anatomy, so any damage done might have been fatal to those he interacted with at the time.
He did not manage to return, and a letter was sent via messenger that, following the tragic incident in the Karasu's village where the spice had been waiting, all cart drivers sent were to be female rather than male. If this request was not followed, then there would be no spices given to the travelers to provide the outside world with the valuable spice.
The price on average for a single bale of Cinder Spice is about thirty to fifty Lodarr, meaning that a cart full of about five to six bales of Cinder Spice can be sold for up to three-hundred Lodarr or more, depending on the quality of the Spice and the amount of Cinder per stalk in each bale. Some cart-drivers have been known to sell large carts full for a few thousand or more, sometimes out of truth and necessity, others out of a penchant for greed and looking for a little more weight to their pockets.
