Selki

The Small Lone Island

The Island smelled of salt-water and freshly baked bread, with a subtle magic wafting in the air. Human merchants and residents alike wandered the colorful streets, passing under decadent overhangs and stands. The soft singing of a mermaid filled the streets with a feeling of warmth and honey, and if you looked closely you could find mermaids, sea elves, sirens, and selkies in human forms mingling with the humans.   Selki is a small Island that was a colony of Aedial founded in the early 1350's. After the homeland realized Selki had magic however, the project was quickly abandoned and Aedial stopped sending its inhabitants resources, or boats to travel back home. The humans living on Selki struggled to survive, and with winter approaching they had little time to prepare. The native sea-life soon realized that there were Humans living on the island, and decided to help out. Many of the humans were initially horrified, as Aedilians are raised sheltered and to fear other magical races. Once they realized the sea-races near the island were friendly, they accepted help. To this day the two groups still mingle and even interbreed.   Selki's economy is based largely around fishing and ship-building. The island is small, but the inhabitants have found ways to use the dense forests and waters to their advantage. The best shipbuilders in the world find work at Selki, and over 78% of Residuel's edible fish comes from Selki. All the finest and most battle-ready ships are made from Selki, as the combination of Human building precision and Sea-Like races knowledge of the ocean is a vital resource in creating the best ships.   Selki is also one of the only Countries in the world that has so many cross-racial marriages and children, since that is usually frowned upon in other Countries. Mermaids, Selkies, Sirens, Sea Elves, and Humans all intermingle and have created a close symbiotic relationship with one another. The towns on the island are made with frequent springs and lakes so Sea-Races with temporary legs can restore their energy if need be, and the towns underwater surrounding the island all have systems of letting the humans breathe.   Selki declared that it would like to be recognized as a country in 1382, after helping many sides of the Gypsy war get supplies, food, and ships. The other Countries saw no downside to this as Selki was almost completely neutral anyways, and so Selki became a country.

Structure

Selki has an Oligarchy of 3 elected individuals who switch off every 4 years. Since Selki is such a small Country, the people usually always directly influence the government, and if someone is suspected to be corrupt they are simply taken out of office before their term is up.

Public Agenda

Selki is inhabited mostly by pacifists, and Selki almost never takes sides in fights unless they are directly being harmed.

Assets

Fishing and Fancy Salts, as well as advanced ship building. Wood is also a fairly common export.
