The Lantern Bearers

"Standing within the warm glow of their lanterns fills one with hope and reassurance, and the succor they provide for those in need can never be understated." -foreword of To Serve the Light, by Inga Hulfsdottir

The Lantern Bearers are a sect of religious practitioners wholly devoted to the gods of light and the sun, Baldur and Sunna. These wandering adherents travel all across Midgard, in life-long pilgrimage, carrying large shinning lantern poles to illuminate the dark and bring succor to the people.

These monks have been traveling all across the land for centuries, offering aid and heartfelt reassurance to any who require it, and wherever they go they bring with them the warm radiance of their divine lanterns. The Lantern Bearers act as healers, priests, warriors, and humanitarian aids for those in need, and all the clans of Midgard acknowledge their importance. Many devoted people firmly believe that if light is ever to truly return to the realms, the Lantern Bearers will certainly have a hand in making it so. These benevolent servants of the gods of light are always welcomed with open arms wherever they go.

Despite how well known they are amongst the people of Midgard, no one, not even the Lantern Bearers themselves can tell you where their monastery is located. The Lantern Bearers never return to the monastery after they set out on their life-long pilgrimage, and soon after they leave, all memory of the monastery's location and their superiors soon fades from their mind.

Structure

The monastery of the Lantern Bearers follows a traditional monastic hierarchy. The monastery is led by an Abbot, his two Deans, the Priors/Prioress', and many Monks/Nuns.

Divine Origins

No one can say for certain when the Lantern Bearers first began their pilgrimages across the realm, but stories told by the Lantern Bearers themselves shed some light as to their possible origins. The stories claim that their order was founded almost immediately after the Great Cataclysm ended, when a spark of the ancient Sun fell from the skies upon its violent destruction. The spark was found by the first Abbot, a devout adherent of the gods of light, and he dedicated their life to protecting it. They constructed the monastery in order to protect the spark, and countless more devoted followers were draw there as the years went on.

The divine lanterns that the Lantern Bearers carry with them at all times are all created from the original spark, and they must never be extinguished.

Granted Divine Powers

Lantern Bearers are not granted any divine powers, aside from the holy lanterns that they carry to spread warmth and illuminate the darkness
