Stormcalling

The Magic of The Elements

The magical manipulation of the rawest form of elemental magical energy is called Storm Calling and the practitioners of this magic, Stormcallers or callers. A Stormcaller holds the powers of the wind, fire, or lightning at their fingertips. A potent but chaotic form of magic, Stormcalling is known for its destructive potential over all else. Most Stormcallers keep their power secret for fear of what a scared populace might do if they were to know, but others find a place serving the militaries of small kingdoms. Some still take to wondering the wilderness in seclusion or to hunting the great beasts beyond the reach of civilized lands.  

Elements of the Storm

Each Stormcaller can only control one specific element of the storm. Each of these elements come with their own challenges and advantages.  

Fire

The embers of magic can be harnessed by some Stormcallers. These callers are not burned when they touch the flame and can control it's shape, size, and heat. Weaker callers of this variety cannot create fire but as they get more powerful, they can learn to ignite pockets of raw magical energy. While the caller can control the fire, the fire still requires fuel to burn so cannot be submerged in water.  

Frost

To the callers who breathes the air of winter, the cold is not discomforting. These callers can frost any surface they touch and freeze still waters solid. A skilled caller with this talent can shape ice as strong as iron and sharp as blades and drop the temperature of an area as large as a small town. The ice and snow made by these callers are resistant to the heat but can be easily broken down into raw magical energy by most magic users.  

Lightning

Wild storms and torrential rain has touched the very soul of the lightning callers. These callers can create arcing bolts of lightning from magical energy and hurl it through the air. They can also serve as a conduit for natural lightning, pulling a bolt down to them to redirect it themselves. To release this power, the caller must build a charge of energy within them and release it in a directed bolt. Unskilled callers of this kind often have trouble aiming their bolts and often risk overcharging. When one of these callers overcharges, they begin to emanate small wild bolts and must discharge quickly before the charge begins to hurt the caller.  

Wind

The very breath of the storm is the breath of some callers. Wind callers can call upon gusts on still days and change the way the winds blow. Skilled callers of this type can create complex wind patterns and some have even become precise enough to move through the air like a leaf in the breeze. These callers are the most socially accepted in society but this is due to the limited nature of their power.

Callers: Myth & Ledgend

There are some mythical figures in history that some claim were callers of two or more aspects of the storm. While many agree this is an impossible feat, many callers find some comfort in these stories past down by the very society that so often shuns them. A popular story passed between callers to each other is one of an ancient caller who held each of the aspects equally and brought peace to several kingdoms. This story is old and has many versions but almost every caller knows one version or another. Some even think that the Great Caller will come back again someday and lead them all to a perfect society.

Author's Notes

The key design choices behind the Stormcallers is to create a group of people who can come together because they are shunned regardless of their race, class or other factors in a similar manner to how the homosexual community was treated in the '80s but with some key differences of course. I also wanted the callers to have a sort of shared myth they all share even though as a group, they are quite loose. There are also some of my personal ideas about how destructive magic should be handled particularly with the Fire and Lightning aspect callers.
