Preservation

The Magic of Rejuvenation

Preservation, practiced by people called Guardians, is the art of tapping into the regenerative and curative aspects of primal green mana. Guardians gather green mana into the hands and place them onto an injured person to magically hasten the healing process by several factors. Guardians must make physical contact with the creature to transfer the mana properly, otherwise, the mana may not find the wound and the creature the Guardian is trying to heal will not be treated. Particularly skilled Guardians can aid in the curing of infections, diseased, and the particularly gifted can occasionally reattach severed limbs.

Guardians as an Order

Guardians are not only practitioners of Preservation magic but also part of an order almost as old as the Arbiter Temples. The Guardians do not choose sides in military conflicts, instead, they treat each side so long as the side means the order no harm as well. The Guardians live by a simple code. "First, do no harm."   Most kingdoms welcome Guardians with open arms offering their members preferential treatment in relation to other travelers. However, no matter how well they are treated everyone is acutely aware that Guardians have no loyalty to any nation. This fact often causes tension in negotiations and war room strategy. Additionally, while the common folk love Guardians, most noble houses have a distance for them, as they send those who can afford to support the order the bills for their care.   Not all Guardians stay with the order. Some learn from the order and then leave to travel healing the poor in the countryside. These Guardians are called Beacons by the common folk. Most Beacons still hold no loyalties to nations or rules but are more likely to work for nobles for a short time due to their status being detached from the Guardian order.

Author's Notes

The biggest goal I had when approaching healing magic was to make it rare and limited. Having it require touch and putting in no way to resurrect the dead is a bold choice for a tabletop roleplay world that is being designed for D&D players so I'm interested in seeing how my players take it.   Here's hoping...

I love how the guardians are solidly grounded to an organization, but can still branch off to allow the players to use the class or there be guardian NPC's.
