Detemus

The Magic of Willpower

Not all casters in Reliah use the fog left from the Sea of Creation to perform their magic but instead tap into the well of magic within themselves. This art is called Detemus and its practitioners are called Arbiters. Unlike most forms of magic, this art was gifted to a set of people directly from a higher power called The Protectorate. The first Arbiters were selected to settle disputes on Reliah in the ages before nobility and birthright became rule of law. Now, in some ways a relic of the past, the Arbiters of today still carry on the traditions of the original set of masters Arbiters.   Arbiters train day and night to perfect their bodies so that it can handle the nature of the magic they use. Arbiters are masters of physical fitness and mental clarity in one. To use Detemus, the Arbiters focus their internal energies in patterns within the body similar to the runes that runecasters use. The patterns and flow of the energy allow the Arbiters to magically enhance their physical form in many ways. However, an Arbiter is limited in how many patterns he can have flowing properly at a time as they each require his focus to maintain. The method of casting also limits the Arbiter to only being able to affect himself and others he touches directly with his magic.   The Arbiters of this age are allowed to travel the world and bring order as they see fit once they complete their training. The form of order that an Arbiter is influenced, but not limited to, the philosophy of the temple they trained in. Each of these temples keeps the tradition of the Master Arbiter that founded them back when the tradition began. The one quality that each school shares to this day is with the strict requirements each student must meet to complete the training and become an Arbiter.

The Six Temples

The moral philosophy of Arbiters is heavily influenced by the philosophy of the masters they train under during their years in the temple. An Arbiter is required to internalize the philosophy of their masters and adapt it for the common age in the way they see fit. However, all Temples teach the tenets of all others as important qualities as well. Each temple simply has specific beliefs they hold in higher priority.

Cobra

The Cobra Temple believes in standing your ground. At the heart of their beliefs, is that any person has the right to defend what is theirs and should not be ruled against for doing so. The Cobra Arbiters believe anything owned must be given and cannot be taken. An object taken is never owned by the person who has taken it. The Cobra Masters stress the importance of craftsmanship and good economic practices.

Crane

The Crane Temple believes peace is of the highest importance. A Crane Arbiter will try to settle any issue in a way they believe will create a lasting peace. Because of this personal goal, the rulings of Crane Arbiters in often critiqued on inconsistency. This does not bother Crane Arbiters, for most of them don't care what is thought but what is done.

Dragon

The Dragon Temple believes in duty above all else. Arbiters of the Dragon Temple value honor and acting in a manner that portraits loyalty to your people, cause, or masters. The Dragon Arbiters take pride in their position and live strict lives in line with the teachings of the original masters. It is for this reason that the Dragon Arbiters have changed the least with the passage of time. Dragon Arbiters often tattoo their bodies to wear their duty for all to see.

Eagle

The Eagle Temple believes in freedom above all else. The free will of the common man is of great value and should not be taken from anyone according to the code of the Eagle Masters. Eagal Arbiters are believers in the idea that people are not wicked unless by choice, and that the only true evil in the world is in the hearts of those who seek to take the liberties of others.

Stag

The Stag Temple believes that what is best for the most people is best for everyone. Masters of The Stag wish to cultivate strong and self-reliant communities that can remain sustainable for generations. To this end, the Arbiters here believe that there is nothing more important than the collective. It is the goal of the Stag Arbiters is to make the world a place without hunger, poverty, or suffering by ensuring every man has what they need and no more.

Tiger

The Tiger Temple believes that might makes right, and the survival of the fittest. The only temple that often comes to blows with the others, the Tiger believe that the strong shall inherit Reliah and that the weak must grow stronger or die trying. Tiger Arbiters see challenges as proving grounds and that if something stands in the way of a man and his goals, it is the fault of the man for not facing the challenge. Yet, somehow, almost paradoxicly, the Tiger hold great respect for the weak that try. No matter the strength of the body, if you arer strong of will a Tiger Arbiter will respect you.

Author's Notes

So, the thing I wanted to get at with the Arbiters was a method of applying oneself and using your internal power as an expression of magic rather than calling upon magic in more conventional forms. That said, I ended up going deeper into the philosophy of the people in question rather than the methods of the magic itself but I'm happy with it for now. I'll honestly have a better idea of how it all works after I decide what kind of effects that Arbiters can produce.
