Channeling

The Magic of Enchantment

The magical art of guiding magic through a weapon to empower its strikes is called Channeling. Casters who practice this form of magic are called Enchanters. An Enchanter often starts as a warrior or soldier before finding they have a knack for shaping magical energy. Enchanters draw power from around them into the body and focus if through their arms into a weapon designed to accept the magical power. These weapons are made of one of a few steel alloys that glow with arcane radiance when empowered by magical forces.   The weapons Enchanters use require the steel to undergo a process during smelting called Spellwarping. This process takes several days to complete but allows for several different kinds of mana to be channeled through the weapon. Each of the seven primary colors of magic has different effects when channeled through weapons constructed from Spellwarped steel.   Channeling is a newer magical art and is thus limited in its complexity. The older arts see channeling as little more than dabbling in magic, often scoffing at the idea that Enchanters are more than novice mages who depend too much on their steel rather than their skills. How Enchanters feel about this fact varies greatly, with some caring little for the mage community and yet others feeling insulted that others refuse to recognize the work and effort they put forward in the field.

Powerful Enchanters

There are some techniques that only the most powerful of Enchanters can begin to master. Chief among these is a technique called Bladeshaping or Spellsharpening. Using this technique, an Enchanter can create weapons from raw magical energy and wield them as if they were physical. The weapons these Enchanters create this way are resistant to all forms of magical tampering and only disperse once the Enchanter releases the weapon from their hands. The reason Enchanters have been able to create these weapons is due to the fact that it takes an immense understanding of the flow of channels on the part of the caster to maintain such weapons.   Once an Enchanter learns to Bladeshape, it is common for them to forego all other weaponry but most still carry some piece of jewelry on their body crafted from Spellwarped Steel. These pieces are most often in the form of rings, bracelets, or pendants that usually use weapon designs as a visual motif.

Mana in Spellwarped Steel

Red: When Spellwarped steel is charged with red mana, attacks the Enchanter makes with the weapon burn with magical fire.   Orange: This color of mana infuses Spellwarped steel with the power to attack magic directly, detonating a pocket of orange mana on contact.   Yellow: The power of yellow mana creates bright flashes of light when the weapon makes contact with any surface. These flashes vary in size in direct relation to how hard the weapon is struck.   Green: Mana of this color causes the weapon to hum and vibrate with arcane power.   Blue: This color of mana infuses Spellwarped steel with the power to deflect magical attacks.   Violet: When Spellwarped steel is charged with red mana, attacks the Enchanter makes with the weapon burn with magical lightning.   White: When charged with white mana, the steel will pull the next magical effect it comes into contact with into the blade and convert it to raw energy to be used by the enchanter.

Author's Notes

The simple goal with Enchanters is to create a set of magic users who approach it from the stance of a combatant first and last. Doing that using the idea of a magical swordsman was honestly kinda straightforward. I love how it turned out so far though and I look forward to fleshing it out in a few ways as the world grows.
