The Eye of the Universe

Created and named by Nabeau, the near-mythical founder of Metropolis from the days of the Old “Spine” Empire, the Eye is the central junction node for the entire Metropolis Interstellar Gate System: the MIGS. The Eye of the Universe is a pearlescent colored, hollow-egg-shaped, high-space focusing lenses located on the north western border of the Central Park. Much of the machinery of the huge device lays deep underground in the Shallows. There, large numbers of Purple Order channelers perform the necessary manipulations of spacetime to enable near instantaneous travel throughout the cosmos. Unfortunately, the gate system was partially destroyed and completely damaged by the Calamity that caused the Great Exodus. Lacking the technology and subspace techniques of the Old Empire, the Metropolis made do for thousands of years with simple F.T.L. drives. While certainly functional, these drives only allowed travel at speeds several hundred times the speed of light, which is markedly slower than Old Empire speeds. 25 years ago, the Purple Order channelers, along with expertise provided by the mysterious Tech Guild and with the careful guidance of Silver Order professors, finished their three centuries’ long mission to repair the defunct system. Proving to a paranoid populous that the gates were not the cause of the Calamity was the purple Order’s first great challenge. But it was not the last. Maven Turran Val, whose grandfather first began this mighty endeavor, personally opened the first stable spacetime wormhole of the new MIGS system. The reopening of the interstellar portals marks the official start of the Fourth Age at the year 4,190 (OTA).

Utility

The utility of the device is manifold. Personnel, equipment, even starships, can be near instantaneously transported from one ODiN to another. The M.S.F. uses this technology to maintain dominance over vast swathes of the galaxy. Use of an individual ODiN requires the use of the central nod, famously called the Eye of the Universe.

Manufacturing

The exact manufacturing and use of the Eye is highly restricted and a secret known only to a few hundred individuals. What is known is that is requires constant Quantum Channeling to create and maintain a stable wormhole.

Inventor(s)

Supposedly created by the Machine God, Nabeau, Purple Order historians reject that claim stating that the technology likely predates the Neo-Spine Empire and is likely of Old Empire manufacturing.

Access & Availability

Access to the device requires payment to power the device. The network actually runs at a slight loss of profits to spur economic growth.

Complexity

The device requires an excessive amount of power and expertise to use. Additionally, it also requires constant Quantum Channeler expert adjustments.
