Scope
The motivation behind building Redania
Created this world on a whim as a child, but I'm ready to put more thought into it now. Redania is my home away from "home", not that what I live in deserves the title. Writing is how I've always coped with the world. The first world I had to cope with was the one I was born into: a wretched hive of scum and immorality. One where the people are convinced they're the righteous, good and faithful servants. People who sincerely believe that they're in this world to train soldiers for the most pointless war in Reality's long history of pointless wars. They've got a soldier, alright. They've got a prisoner of war.
The goal of the project
Sanctuary for my imaginary friends―"characters" for the allegedly clever and grown-up peoples. They're the best company I've ever had, they deserve the best home ever: one built by yours truly.
Redania's Unique Selling point
Literally how I started writing was recording the adventures I had with my imaginary friends. They've always been real enough for me. Even if some of them are less wise, more dangerous, and completely irresponsible. We do not kill our darlings in our household. I've had death, destruction, and damnation preached at me since birth. It's important not to ignore death, but who am I beyond an angry little boy who grew up way too fast?
Theme
Genre
Fantasy, with occasional sci-fi friends. The one decent set of literatue I had growing up was Lord of the Rings, after all. Not even the whole series, just the Holy Quadrilogy. Quality over quantity, I suppose. And now that I have multiple quality books on my hands, I have no time to read them. Hooray...
Reader Experience
- Chiaroscuro: strong contrasts between light and dark. Or in this case, evil and good.
Colorful and sparkly!
Moody, yet
Oddly comforting.
Reader Tone
An overworked, underpaid pony tries to make some magic happen.
Recurring Themes
Reality is complicated and confusing, and yet instead of embracing all these complications and confusions, so many people―including the hive of scum and righteousness I'm trapped in―demand it to be made simple and understandable. What. Utter. Nonsense.
“He'll be coming and going" he had said. "One day you'll see him and another you won't. He doesn't like being tied down--and of course he has other countries to attend to. It's quite all right. He'll often drop in. Only you mustn't press him. He's wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Fake it 'til you make it. And when you get bored, Shake It Up!
Character Agency
Generally speaking, adults have more power and agency in this world than children. Whether the adults actually do anything useful is another matter. Or maybe I've mixed Redania up with Reality again~.
