Black Jack
(a.k.a. Jack Skewerstone)
Black Jack is a Warden of The Vanguard notorious in northern areas of Winval. He boasts an impressive track record and has yet to encounter a monster he couldn't face single handed.

Jack has a glowing yellow eye and can see in the dark due to years of honing his monster hunting magical abilities.
Apparel & Accessories
Jack wears a long black duster and hat as a lot of his job involves being out in the rain and exposed to the elements. He wears a leather eye patch over his missing left eye and several belts and holsters to carry all his gear as he travels like a drifter. He has a broadsword across his back, a flintlock pistol at his hip, a whip on the other hip and a journal strapped to his thigh in which he makes notes on the beasts he encounters.

Personal history
Jack Skewerstone or 'Black Jack' grew up in the town of Wulfhelm in the east of Winval. He was born into poverty with two sisters as the youngest of the family. Growing up in Wulfhelm, he had to learn quickly to look after himself and be able to defend himself from the things that go bump in the night.
When he was fifteen, a large, one - eyed direbat had made it's nest in the church of Torm bell - tower and was feasting on unsuspecting nuns and clergymen in the dead of night. The town was unable to afford a bounty hunter or monster slayer to deal with the beast so instead the town priests posted a plea in the town square asking any kind-hearted fighters to come together and rid the church of the beast. Many tried and many died in the process.
Finally, Jack took up the job much to his sisters' disapproval. having nothing more than an old sword belonging to his father, a rusty, dented shield and a pocket full of rocks, he made his way into the empty church. Stepping over half even bodies, he cautiously navigated the halls, until finally coming to a large open area where the beast sat in one corner devouring what was once a paladin.
Suddenly a cascade of masonry collapsed in the opposite corner creating a loud noise, he monster raised it's head as it twisted it's ears in that direction, and as Jack surveyed the area he noticed that all the dead men lay in large suits of plate mail which had been torn open, and adorned with heavy religious chains and masses of weapons. Loud armour and clanking weapons. Jack had realised that the direbat was blind. Sneaking up on the creature, Jack slammed his sword hilt against the shield repeatedly, dazing it with the sudden noise as he clambered onto it's back and began stabbing his sword into it's shoulder. The monster spread it's wings and took off with him clinging onto it's back, spiralling and slamming into walls as it tried to shake him off.
The Bat burst through one of the church walls sending shattered bits of masonry across the streets and into the face of Jack as he clung on for dear life. He stabbed it and stabbed it repeatedly until finally the monster collapsed into town square with a teenage boy stood on it's back, covered in dust and blood with a sword jammed between the creature's shoulder blades. As Jack wiped the blood and dust from his face he clutched at his left eye to halt blood flow, for in defeating the blind creature, he had lost sight in his left eye.
Employment
Jack is a roaming bounty hunter and monster slayer. He travels from town to town looking for jobs in town halls, notice boards and taverns. He also takes jobs by courier and will travel to remote villages to help them if the price is worth his while. However he has recently took up semi-permanent residence at The Museum of Unnatural History as a member of The Luck and the Pussycats Adventuring Guild.
