Legendary Sword Above All Legends

There once was a sword used by a noble king to defend his realm from foes without. Unfortunately, the king failed to defend from the foes within. An easy thing to miss, especially even for veterans such as he. So a king who might have died peacefully in bed passed on from his battle wounds and his body was buried among kings.

Though its master was gone, the sword was just fine. Sharp, ornate, and powerful, this legendary sword practically begged for a worthy master. But none could be found, so the king's mourners did what anyone would do with such a blade. They chucked it into the lake. It sunk to the bottom. It didn't drown, though, because it's a sword. It doesn't have lungs.

More's the pity.

Though the sword was no longer around to speak of its own valor, there were more than enough gossips in the kingdom to spread its fame. Thanks to those gems of society, the memory of that legendary sword lives to this day. No one knows anymore what the king's name was, or even which kingdom he ruled, but the sword's name was Exibur.

Exibur's tale does not end there. It was found by a diligent, perhaps obsessive, mercenary who went on to wield it in many victorious battles and not a few defeats. That's normal for a mercenary. The next part, however, is not. Supposedly, during a war between two nations of Immortals, the mercenary died.

You'd think someone would have simply picked up the sword and kept fighting, but both commanders stopped their armies in mid-battle, called an immediate truce, and the former enemies put their heads together to think of a way to dispose of the sword so no one would ever find it.

After which the fighting resumed as normal.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Exibur was a magical, of course. It was probably one of the first of its kind, judging by the age of the legend. There is a lot of debate whether the sword would be as effective now as it was then. There really aren't enough known facts to solve the question, for knowledge of how the first magical swords were created is scant.

Well written and witty, loved it! But why did the mercenaries death put a pause on the war? and why did the armies feel a need to destroy it? it's always good to read an article that leaves you wanting more.
