Episode 29

Night of Mischief

General Summary

Finished with their various adventures deep within Lock's Fathom, the group slowly made their way back to the surface with their spoils before any more Gloom could locate them. They reconvened with the circus, making certain that One, the large cyclops, was able to help them carry Garroth's companion Rocky. The group then set out for their next destination: The Holy Empire. Their goal would be to investigate their lead into Dublin Lanister, and perhaps travel more broadly, searching for more Pyres or to explore the capital of the Holy Empire.

The party took a diversion to the small town of Holyhead on their travels. They learned news that Princess Caldus had been killed, with rumours that it was her lover that had committed the heinous act. The group decided to stay in the town as Korva had business for the evening, specifically to attend a rumoured cult meeting for The Vagrant on his holy day of Mischief, which was confirmed to be in a small forest near the town. As the camp set up for the evening, they were visited by the local mayor, who offered them attendance at the inn if they so chose, excited to see a circus in town; an offer they accepted. In the inn, the group and the circus members enjoyed their happy evening of frivolity.
But justice was at hand. As Korva readied himself, he noticed several cloaked worshipers of The Vagrant meeting in the forest, and set off to engage in his own acts. Meanwhile, however, the caped crusader of the Night of Mischief - Jack of Hearts - took watch over the strange town he found himself in, looking for any and all mischief that would be afoot. He located a strange temptress who seemed to try to sway him from his perch, but justice is unmoving. Later, Jack noticed two children breaking windows, and dived upon them violently. One child evaporated into nothingness, and after striking the other with a knife, Jack followed a trail of blood back to the inn.
Korva, at his cult meeting, found himself engrossed in chanting and knife fighting. However, suddenly, his twine of the Raven Queen came into view, as he was being given an order. No sooner had it appeared, then the vastly stronger Vagrant intervened at his own worshipers rally. He ordered Korva to seek out a foul being that was planning to twist the freedoms of the nearby town-people.
It was this being that descended upon Jack and Maul, the Many-Faced God, which had erected an avatar to twist the town with its illusions in order to spring a trap on Jack. Through a fierce combat, the party was able to fell the avatar, and release the town from whatever deadly magical enchantment had been placed upon it.
