Château de la Sorcière

Purpose / Function

Château de la Sorcière, also known as the Château, or the Rock (from the large monolithic mountain upon which it sits), was constructed as a stronghold and base for the Witches of Ravenblood, beginning with Queen Merjem Darkskull in 832 AA.

Alterations

On the second floor, part of an unused hall was converted into the Dark Room, Electreco's dungeon for political and personal prisoners.

Architecture

The building is constructed mostly out of basalt and has limestone crenelations, and to achieve a feeling of reaching toward the heavens, it is supported with Gothic buttresses and contains Gothic cathedral-style windows and arches, but some rooms in the castle tend to lean toward the Romanesque style, particularly the chapels and sanctums' short, rounded-top windows. The castle's Throne Room contains a throne of jade, but the floor is marble and in the center sits a Great Seal of Ravenblood. At the base of the Rock sits a service tunnel, which is seldom guarded, but through a maze of tunnels leads into one of the towers.

History

In 833 AA, Merjem Darkskull, along with a coven of witches, dedicated followers, ordered the construction of a massive Château upon the plateau-like mountain later named The Rock. It was completed in the month of Coda, bringing an end to the Era of Establishment and launching the Era of Interaction. Since her long reign, it held varying witch-queens and regimes, until 64AA, where the Witches of Ravenblood attempted to invade Therana. Their attempt failed, and wizarding leader Jole Qia conquered the Rock and held court there to maintain order and subdue the violent witches. Unfortunately, in 44AA his power in the east had run thin, and Electreco returned to the Rock, where she executed Qia by means of the guillotine. From there on, she ruled as an absolute monarch, and it wasn't until 23QY when her sovereignty was seriously challenged. In 16QY Electreco abducted Lily Astana to hold as prisoner, and she abducted Fleur Mounty in early 23QY while on a Fleur was on a reconnaissance mission, and held them both in her Dark Room. In the month of Coda they were freed and Electreco captured, and so the castle was left vacant for months, until her return from escaping the Dungeon.
