Northreach

Northreach is the most northerly city within the influence of the United Kingdoms and is largely the industrial heart of the combined nations. The city is nestled within a defensible crescent bay, surrounded on three sides by mineral rich mountains. Primarily it's wealth comes from mining, with rich Gold, Copper and Platinum mines, Rock quarries and a strong focus on developing new magical technological weapons and devices - a byproduct of their focus during the war. It is also the where Victaline Ore was first discovered, though mining and storage of the mineral have since been regulated and outlawed after the disaster that hit the City of Spires.   While the city was a tempting target during the war, it's geographic location far from the front lines, combined with how difficult it is to reach the city (situated north of the pirate-infested Sea Dragon Spine archipelago, navigating ships to the region is time consuming - at best, and outright dangerous at worst ). However, with the advent of a new airship transportation link between Northreach and Queensmarch, travel too and from the city is poised to be considerably easier.   Currently, tensions within the city have been high, with a faction of 'traditionalists' butting heads with 'modernists' who are attempting to fuse technology and magic together in ways that the former find dangerous and abhorrent to the natural world. Though the conflict is currently low-key, it wouldn't take much for it to explode into full-scale violence. Something that the Queen and the UK in general has an interest in defusing before it becomes a disruptive problem for the rest of the Kingdom.

Demographics

Mostly humans, dwarves and halflings. There is a small elven presence although they are treated with some deal of suspicion due to their connections to "traditionalist" ideals. Others (tiefling, etc) are present in small numbers - usually as visiting adventurers or explorers heading for the largely uncharted Frostedge Tundra beyond the mountains.

Government

A triumvirate of regional managers, each reporting to the Queen directly but responsible for their own sections of the city. One handles everyday mining and industry matters, one deals with the daily running of the city and it's citizens, and the third handles security forces and policing within the city borders. Each have their own set of officials and go-betweens and are constantly at loggerheads with each other for funding and influence from the crown.

Defences

The city is naturally protected on three sides by impassable mountains, and the fourth side is open to the sea and protected by several armoured juggernauts and shore-based cannons. The city has no standing army, so policing is handle exclusively by the beleaguered and over-worked city watch, which is prone to corruption.   In event of disaster, the tiered city can be sealed and compartmentalised, so that each section can be quarantined in the event of an outbreak of violence and rebellion.

Industry & Trade

Trade is almost exclusively minerals and ore. Prior to the end of the war this was all for the war effort. Now that the war is over, the profits generated by renewed trade in raw materials has made the city very wealthy indeed.

Infrastructure

The notable feature of the city are the massive networked canals that run through all sections of the city, allowing for the easy transportation of mined minerals and ores from the mountains at the deepest part of the city, down to the shipping and dockland area. The harsh conditions of the cold north lands are tempered by the utilisation of thermal energy which both keeps the city warm and provides power for some of the factories, refineries and technological marvels found within it's walls.

Guilds and Factions

The city is home to several independent mining guilds and trading houses, an independent alliance of Artificers and Technological progressives and a small but growing underground movement of 'traditionalists' who eschew the fad of fusing technology and magic together. Each of these factions vie against each other for control and influence of the city.

Natural Resources

Gold, Copper and Platinum Ore. Quarried Granite. A small timber operation attempting to work outside the city limits to the north, but with little real success.
