Origin of Magic

Overview

The Raw Magic of the world has no widely agreed upon beginning, being one of the most hidden and misunderstood forces of the universe. However, it is unlikely that magic came about before or after the time that the other fundamental forces of the universe, including gravity, came into existence. The wild magic of the universe is observed to be different from the Raw Magic of Earth, and the evolution of terrestrial magic has a muddier history.
Magic and Earth Intertwined
Terrestrial Raw Magic, like tamed magic, has a quasi-sentience that directs it towards efforts that can preserve life. The Raw Magic of the universe may very well do the same, providing a habitable zone for colonized celestial bodies by helping to block deadly forces, though there is no way for even modern Laku to test this with existing technology, especially with the need to hide from humans.   Throughout history, terrestrial magic has dwelled deep in the Earth's core and slowly seeps out towards the surface. The Earth is an oasis for life on its own and for much of the planet's history, this magic has remained present but dormant. However, there have been times of peril that lead to mass extinctions. Life can be categorized as fragile in some respects, but in reality the diversity of life forms makes it possible for some life to survive these events. Magic upwells from the core in these events, lending a sort of helping hand for these survivors and aiding the transition of the planet back into an oasis for life once again. How magic works in these events is not understood and it may never be understood fully unless such an event happens again. Some researchers, though, believe the Earth would not be habited by any sort of life form without magic mysteriously intervening in these events.    The occurrences of upwellings and their effects are mere theory, with little supporting fact, but no evidence exists that refutes these ideas. In contemporary times, dragons and other highly skilled Laku have noted slight fluctuations in the concentration of Raw Magic around them when major events occur, though these changes are small, perhaps similar in proportion to the scale of the event and its effect on life on Earth. Others have noted the faint residue of magic at certain geological sites, too faint to identify the source or the original purpose.
The Rise of Magic Users
The most recent upwelling is believed to have occurred 65 million years ago, when the Earth was struck by an asteroid that caused a mass extinction event. Like before, Raw Magic likely helped repair the damage done to the planet and helped life take off again. Unlike after previous upwellings, the life that remained became sensitive to the force of magic, retaining this sensitivity once concentrations of magic near the surface returned to normal.   The evolution from magic sensing to magic using came about over countless millions of years, with the distant ancestors of dragon kind being the first species to perform spells. Higher intelligence had evolved after the ability to use magic, so early magic users were only capable of intuitive spells and their magical stamina would have been meager.   More important to the evolution of the early dragons than the ability to use magic was the realization of how magic is a force that nurtures and protects life. Even modern dragons retain the notion that magic, and their species, are guardians of life, and this idea forms the basis of their moral code. Not all Laku share this belief, and those who evolved to use inverse magic especially do not hold the same morals.
