Technology and Magic: Defining the Spectrum of Aptitudes

Hey, there, Archie here. Yeah, the Architect. I go by Archie. This article is metacommentary, so I can directly communicate to you, the reader, certain things about the world of Project Mystica. Thanks for taking the time to read these articles. With you, the Day Cometh!   ----------------------------------   When it comes to metaphysics, nothing is more tenuous between the relationship between the ideas of technological prowess and magical prowess. I will define this as a "Spectrum of Aptitudes", where the technological side of the scale represent the traditionally "left brain" aspects of the human condition: logic, rationality, critical thought; the magical (a.k.a "the mystical") side of things, of course, represents traditionally "right brain" functions: creativity, imagination, and intuition. I believe that as a person reaches peak mental maturity, they will hopefully establish a balance that synthesizes these aspects of the mind.   Technological and Mystical aptitudes show themselves through organic development, and there are a number of organizations dedicated to optimizing a particular interest. When it comes to the mystical, it is established that this is an internally originating energy that can be further explored with metaphors, shared traits, identifiable effects and philosophical constructs. They have loosely defined labels that can easily escape rigid understanding, which often makes study seem less like structured memorization and more like fluid meditations.   Conversely, technology typically follows severe and unyielding logic, which makes it more accessible to those inclined to regimented lifestyles and generally easier to process for most people. Often, technology can be simplified, since it relies more on the application of consistent physics and mathematics than the mystical arts, and its effects are most reliable and consistent.   Of course, the idea that they are mutually exclusive is not entirely correct - while there exists clear boundaries between these concepts, there is a spectrum where the lines blur. Much like with morality, there isn't really one way to think; just as technology can be just as flexible, adaptive and organic as the most freeform works of art, so can the mystical require a specific and punishing adherence to esoteric laws that only the most studious can comprehend. Often, the results of each can be difficult to tell apart, and that is where a character's mastery of a particular subject can truly shine.   Thus, in Project Mystica, there is a large variety of mixed genres, so it's entirely possible to have augmented humanoids firing elemental blasts and fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with robed wizards toting tactical loadouts of their favorite assault rifles. Warfare is a spectacle of awesome and terrible proportions.   To set a baseline for common understanding, here are the common definitions for each end of the spectrum:   The Technological is specifically defined as the study and application of an understanding of aptitudes based on maths, sciences, physics, and the scientific process with which tools an be made and work can be done. Those with the aptitude for the technological are extremely useful for salvaging the remains of the fallen Empire, and comprise the majority of the population of the world's inhabitants.   The Mystical is understood to be the study and application of spell effects, techniques, and even belief structures that prioritize producing those effects and generating the energy from oneself. Magical power is borne from an innate ability that all living creatures share, although it may not always manifest strongly in a given individual. Caveat: certain abilities, effects and spells seems to affect the world itself, as if they can temporarily change the metaphysical structure of the world itself. Other times, it is possible to summon creatures or objects from outside of the world. Powers of this nature are labeled as "Occult", and are extremely powerful and dangerous. This falls almost explicitly in the realm of "secret knowledge", and thus, is affected by the influence of Mother Iris.   The rules allow a lot of wiggle room, which I think is fair enough to begin with. As Project Mystica develops, the rule may change, but the main concept of these ideas existing in a "spectrum" will likely not change.

Manifestation

This law is inherently seen in how a character chooses to apply themselves. Everyone who tries will find something that they are good at. For most, it happens quickly and early in life, but there will be some cases where someone won't be very sure on what sort of aptitude they will have until much later.

Localization

This affects the entirety of Homeworld, but might not be universally true outside of Homeworld's solar system.
Type
Metaphysical, Divine
