Skill Rolling Examples

Normal Skill Roll
If a player wants her character to climb a wall, it must roll Agility (Attribute) & Athletics (Skill). If the character has Agility D8 and athletics D6, the player must roll 1D8 & 1D6. If she scores 3 in the D8 and 6 in the D6, she keeps the latter.

Difficulty
If a player intends to track an animal through a forest, difficulty is 6. However, if it needs to be tracked through a lonely muddy terrain or snow, difficulty could be reduced to 3. If tracking should be performed over hard barren rock, difficulty could increase to 7. Attempting the same in the crowded main road of a town may reach a difficulty of 9.

Acing
Parallel:
If you get a 4 in a D4, and a 6 in a D6, you re-roll both dice and get a 3 in the D4 and a 2 in the D6. this means got 4+3=7 with the D4 and 6+2=8 with the D6, so the final outcome is the greatest of both, which in this case is 8.
Consecutive:
If you roll a 4 in a D4 and a 2 in a D6, you get to re-roll the D4. If you get another 4, you can re-roll it once again. This time you get a 3. Hence, you finally got 4+4+3=11 with the D4, and that's the final outcome of the roll.

Contended or Opposed Rolls
A trained hunter puts a trap in the forest the player characters are exploring. Even though the hunter installed it days ago, the GM rolls Agility & Survival for the hunter, and gets a 6. The player leading the party rolls Perception & Notice, he Aces, and gets a 12, which exceeds the difficulty by 6. Since the roll exceeded the difficulty by more than 4, it is considered a Raise. However, it is only a single Raise, since the roll did not manage to exceed the difficulty by 8 (2 raises), 12 (3 raises), and so on. So, since the player surpassed the difficulty, she manages to discover the trap on time, but since she got a Raise the GM gives an additional benefit. The GM determines she receives a -2 modifier to difficulty if the player tries to deactivate it, and if he manages to do so, he will be able to recover useful materials: a rope and a net.
