This is relevant only to bows and slings, thrown weapons such as axes and javelins must be used as hand-to-hand weapons.
You suffer a +2 difficulty modifier in your attack rolls.
Shooting a nearby target is deceptively difficult, since you were trained to shoot at long distance.
Besides, when the arrow leaves the bow tends to bend a bit, and stabilizes after it fully departs.
Furthermore, there is a huge stress factor when the only thing between you and a raging buffalo is a mere arrow.
