Hulks
Hulks are giant carnivorous beatles the size of an ancient african elephant, and about the same weight.
They live in the desert, so their thick chitin armor is yellowish brown to camouflage with the sands, but when angered they turn green or red. They have a set of 2 m long serrated mandibles, and a sharp and strong 3 m long trident shaped horn. Even though their feet are wide to dig and walk over the sand, their legs have very sharp protrusions.
Besides these weapons they have long antennae resembling green twigs, with a tip that can be lit with bioluminiscence at will.
They eat mostly carrion, but they are also extremely good at hunting by surprise.
They remain very still and suddenly squash smaller and dumber prey with their feet to use it as a lure. After that, they dig themselves into the sand with surprising speed considering their size, leaving only their antennae to be seen.
In this way, a predator or scavenger may come looking the smaller prey, or a herbivore may confuse the antennae for twigs, and when they approach, the hulk energes suddenly with incredible speed and kills the creature. Vultures are among one of their most common meals.
They use their bioluminiscent antennae at night to lure insects into their mandibles.
