Greatcoons

They descend from racoons and look like brownish versions of them. They retain the black patch in the eyes and the striped tail.
The interesting part is that they are the size of a grizzly bear, with bigger fangs and similar claws. This creature filled their ecological niche once they went extinct.
Their frontal paws are not as deft anymore, since they evolved for hunting and defense, and the claws get in the way.
They are omnivore, but they have the muscle, fang and claw to kill pretty much whatever they like.
The behavior, however, differs greatly from the bears. Greatcoons retained the smarts, cunning, curiosity and cheekiness of racoons, and it evolved further. They are capable of solving problems other animals are incapable of. They display crude tool using behaviour, they are known to catch prey using lures, and to disorient pursuers by leaving fake trails.
Furthermore, in spite of their great size and weight, they are great climbers.
Climbing a tree won't stop them from hunting you, and feigning death will not fool them either.
They have splendid reflexes and they are capable of running with astonishing speed over short distances.
Thankfully, they are mostly opportunistic creatures. They are not immediately aggresive to humans. If they spot a human, or their encampments, they will definitely approach, and they will try to steal any food and any remarkable or shiny piece of gear. However they will not make any attempt to hide. And any suspicious movement or defense attempt will be dealt with with extreme savagery.
They like to bring all sorts of trinkets and gear to their cubs for them to play.
If you find an abandoned den, you will most probably find interesting stuff in it.
If the den was only empty, the occupier will notice missing stuff and will try to track you down to retrieve its missing stuff (and steal your stuff too).
If you manage to get a cub, you can try to tame it, but they are hard to tame, and their intelligent nature will often make them have wills of their own.
