It is a way to refer to whatever the different tribes use for exchange and commerce. Some of them might use metal coins, others might use scallop shells, ancient junk, any shiny trinket available, or even human teeth. Other people might not know about money, and they just barter with grain or valuables.

In a complete desert, it might cost quite more, in a rainy jungle, 1 barter might get you 3 canteens.
The price is affected by the Quality of what you are buying, selling or hiring, although the price of some things might also be affected by their size, and all of them are affected by demand and scarcity.
This calculated average is multiplied with their normal price, to get a final price, properly adjusted for the quality of the object, size and/or demand/scarcity (if relevant).
