OttD Session 9: Assault on The Window

General Summary

Zerrof departs off-screen to mediate on why Mazu is hiding. Vun Roade and Tornac, still winding down from their previous adventures, are interrupted when their badges turn red and begin to vibrate. They rush to The Window, where they find utter pandemonium. Three Kenku are standing in the center of the room, heavily wounded and entirely non-communicative. One is missing their left arm. Other Doormen are standing to the sides of the room, prepared for an attack.   Tornac heals the wounded. Pestle returns from his visit to Kilead, and proceeds to completely upstage Tornac with healing spirit. Shortly after, Jane explains that these Kenku had just returned from the Elemental Plane of Air, where the Kenku are forbidden. They were violently forced back through the portal, and shortly after Jane finishes this explanation, one of the nearby wooden doorways explodes.   Soon, the air itself appears to attack the injured Kenku. It begins to whirl and slash away, violently attacking them once again. The party engages the air in combat, and are aided by a friendly doorman casting Faerie Fire. Unfortunately, this does not save the wounded; the Kenku that had lost an arm is eventually decapitated, and another wounded within an inch of their life. While The Celestial/Murderers are fighting, other doormen replace the destroyed doorway with a heavy metallic one, and weld it onto the wall.   Many other doormen begin arriving on the scene, including Mama Bear and Zorkul Clalthicul. Mama says that she had just come from Ysgard, where she expected Sconce to be spending his afterlife, but he was nowhere to be found, and his wife, who had already passed on to Ysgard, had not heard from him either. Pestle casts Divination to ask Olidammara where Sconce would be in five days, but Olidammara did not know the answer. Mama Bear, baffled by this discovery, also casts Divination and asks Tyr what Sconce would be doing in five days. The answer: he would be fighting. Seeking an explanation for the explanation for the explanation, the party visits a temple to The Raven Queen. A priestess there does a reading for them and says that while Sconce was assigned to Olidammara, he was taken somewhere other than his expected destination of Ysgard. She did not know where that destination was.   The party decides to go back to The Bloated Sunfish to recuperate before deciding on their next course of action. While there, they see a drunken Pixo, who expresses sadness and anger about the attack. He says that his ancestors tried to steal something long ago, and his entire race had been punished for it. He also said Penguin was working on a solution, but instead of elaborating he departed, muttering angrily to himself.   The party has a long rest, and then decides to take the opportunity to begin working on Sconce's Will some more. They contact Penguin for an escort to his home in Dis . He takes them to Avernus, where they are intimidated by the guards, but eventually let in. Penguin gives the party a bit of a history lesson while they walk, telling them about the local ruler, Zariel and briefly taking them to see Tiamat, the goddess of greed, chained in a large crater. He then takes them to the River Styx, and tells them they could either travel by boat for a few hours, or go by foot for a couple of weeks. He also informs the party that he used to be a ferrymen on the river, and he was very good at it. He even met Ophelia that way. Tornac refuses to travel by boat, until Vun Roade casts a Charm person spell on him. Tornac botches his wisdom save, and promptly climbs on the boat, which is a small sloop.   Pestle asks Penguin about what kind of skills are necessary for being a ferrymen. Penguin replies that many sills are important, but the reason he survived so long was that he made friends with the river. Apparently, it is quite fond of sappy love songs. Pestle casts Enhance Ability on Penguin, who begins navigating down the river singing "Come Sail Away", by Styx.
