Lakeside District

The oldest part of Polaxius, the crumbling, sinking marshes of the Lakeside district hold the vast majority of the city's remaining culture, as well as provides a home for the more esoteric or monstrous species that reside in the city- which, despite their own history, seem to be more invested in maintaining the unique culture that the community provides more than the humans that once resided there do!

Demographics

Unlike the other districts of Polaxius, the Lakeside District is filled with the stranger, more esoteric species, such as abyssals, lizardfolk, and even a friendly aboleth who maintains an oddities shop within the section. These species find themselves here, shunted to the waterside community by society that too often mistreats these creatures, and quickly find a home- these outsiders have formed their own 'family' of sorts within the district, and always welcome newcomers to their district, be they humanoid or otherwise. Because of this widespread diversity, the Lakeside District is filled with all sorts of interesting traditions, superstitions, and worship, with the unspoken rule of 'if you don't hurt others, we won't hurt you' being ever-so-prevalent within the community.

Industry & Trade

The cuisine of the Lakeside District is perhaps the most popular thing about this district outside of the Causeway, and is primarily why the city tolerates them and allows the stranger species to reside within the city limits. They possess a strange style of spices, meat, and seafood that favors fiery and energetic flavors, made to counter the heavy and cold salt mist that drifts in from both sides of the city. Because of this, they remain a popular, well-traveled part of the city for those wise enough to hide the distrust of the monstrous species that reside there, even despite the fact that the district seems to sink deeper and deeper into the ground with every passing year.

Infrastructure

The Lakeside District has two distinct sections- the half of the district that holds the lakefishers, the porters, and the few government officials who keep track of the imports coming in through the entrance of the Grand Causeway, and the half of the district that holds the restaurants. As the origin point of the Grand Causeway, it draws a lot of attention for maintenance- at least, up to the extent of the buildings visible from the Causeway itself. There are many inns and taverns along this path, advertising services to passing ships while leading up to the first major docking bay within the city itself. Most ships, however, never see past this clean, neat, and well-painted road, leading behind it to buildings ruined from sinking into the marsh sludge or- in some places- even having entire communities with only a series of plank walkways between buildings, with the citizens using boats almost as much as they do the paths half the time.
