Scope
The motivation behind building Pokemon Horizons
Pokemon Horizons is part of my attempt to fix what I dislike about the Pokemon setting as it currently stands. I want it to be an interesting and accessible setting where Pokemon and their unique abilities, not trainers and their exploitation, are the focus. Pokemon has always appealed to people who see themselves in the creatures that inhabit the world, more than the humans who use them for battle. I want to explore what a world inhabitated by sapient creatures with unique abilities might be like.
The goal of the project
The setting is meant to be primarily a foundation for players to experience a world where sapient creatures with unique abilities are in the process of building a society and discovering their own strengths and weaknesses. I want to eventually be able to run tabletop campaigns in the setting or create fanfiction. My ultimate goal would be to have it spread to the Pokemon community and see fanart!
Pokemon Horizons's Unique Selling point
This setting retains many core concepts from the original Pokemon setting, but they've been stripped down to their essentials and reimagined. The Pokemon themselves are the focus, and the ways that their unique abilities shape the world around them has been brought forward. What would a society where living creatures produce enough electricity to power a city look like?
Theme
Genre
Steampunk-fantasy, with strong shonen influences. Technology is driven by pokemon and their abilities.
Reader Experience
The world is young, having been created by ancient pokemon just a handful of lifetimes ago. The world is ripe for exploration and expansion, and there are many mysteries to discoer.
Reader Tone
The world is largely bright fantasy, with only a dash of darkness here and there.
Character Agency
Most pokemon, especially focus characters, are wildly powerful in individual ways. Their level of Z-Energy, a core type of energy that gives them unique abilities, directly influences how strong they are, and how much influence they can exert. These powers often clash explosively, but a pokemon's ideals are what ultimately win out.
