Talagan Fever

Talagan fever has been the scourge of people in the cold swamps of Karkovia for centuries. It's a painful, debilitating disease that usually puts a sufferer on their back for at least a week and kills about one patient out of every thousand who contract it. Symptoms include fatigue, body aches, severe gastrointestinal distress, and a high fever.   Until just last year, there was no known treatment for it. Now the chirurgeons who are treating it are in possession of a legitimate wonder drug, they just don't know it yet.   The treatment is a mix of a fungus that grows in a lot of the same places that Talagan fever is most common and a bit of aelglurn. While the doctors who has created the treatment lacks the verbiage to understand this, he has created the first viable antibiotic of the current age.   The treatment was derived from a couple of local folk remedies. Many swamp villagers eat the kepfar mushroom as a way of treating indigestion and headaches, and aelglurn is used for its purifying properties all over Plavithen. By combining the two, the doctor inadvertently increased the potency of both. The resulting tonic is chalky, bitter, and not particularly pleasant to drink, but a week of daily draughts will completely cure Talagan fever, and patients usually feel better in just a day or two. Kepfar mushrooms are especially common in and around the Chokewater swamp, though the many hazards of that place make the collection of mushrooms from it a daunting prospect for anyone except veteran adventurers.    So far, the treatment is just in the hands of doctor Allen Czor and his assistants, but word is spreading, and Czor is a generous and kind soul who wishes to heal the sick, so odds are good that the treatment will spread.
