Exocarbon Plasma
Properties
Material Characteristics
Exocarbon Plasma (also known simply as "Plasma") is a highly volatile plasma with many variations such as Red Exocarbon Plasma or White Exocarbon plasma. It is very bright and combusts when exposed to oxygen. It is semi-transparent and translucent, though most variations radiate light.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Exocarbon Plasma is highly volatile and usually combusts when exposed to air. It is also incredibly energy dense and because of this, these combustions can be quite large. It is usually found in a plasma form and that is created in that form, often from coal. It is composed of mostly carbon with some other elements as well.
Geology & Geography
Can be mined on any planet that has existed long enough to have coal, while not mined as plasma it is then processed into the form of plasma.
Origin & Source
Comes from coal, when mixed with various other compounds and then plasmarized.
Life & Expiration
Combusts almost immediately on contact with oxygen. Various kinds last different lengths, as can be seen in this table.
*Approximate length of time for plasma to lose 99% of it's energy. Plasma may be rendered useless prior to this.
Type of Plasma | Unheated Decay Time* |
Red Plasma | 2.37 Days |
White Plasma | 4.22 Years |
Pink Plasma | 23.92 Seconds |
Gold Plasma | 45.43 Years |
History & Usage
History
Discovered in 1365 CT, It took over 100 years to start being used for energy source, when it was used to power a space freighter. When it was discovered how efficient this was, other ships began using it as a power source. By 1500 CT almost everything was powered by Plasma. The Plasma industry became the largest and most successful industry on many planets. However because of it volatility it lead to many accidents and was used as a weapon to destroy ships very quickly by damaging their plasma tanks. This lead to multiple small plasma tanks on ships to reduce the risk of such a large explosion.
In the war of Kharlern in 1645-1653 Plasma was a vital resource and became heavily guarded as plasma mining stations became major targets. It was also used as a weapon in missiles, bombs, and used to power many other weapons.
Discovery
Discovered by Vert Bernenteo of the Kharls in 1365 CT. Vert Bernenteo discovered that carbon plasma can be modified to be extremely energy dense. He made a note of it, but didn't publish it until 1378 when he wrote a paper about it. It wasn't until 1470 when Bonetea Daclaive began experimenting with using it as a power source. He first used it to power lights, then he realised it's potential and was able to use it to power a freighter ship.
Everyday use
Plasma is commonly used as a power source for everything from computers to spaceships to weapons. It's energy density means that a device can be placed in it to draw a large amount of energy from it very rapidly, often in the from of electrical energy.
Refinement
Usually mined in the form of coal, which is then refined and mixed with other compounds or elements. Some of these include gold, nitrogen, copper, and uranium. The elements used vary depending on the type of plasma. Red Plasma is often mixed with up of gold, copper, and various acids.
Hazards
Due to it's volatility, plasma can be hazardous if not stored correctly. If exposed to oxygen it combusts within 1-7 seconds, with the exception of pink plasma, which boils away. Due to this, there are very strict rules on how to store it and how it can be used.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Provided by most governments as a free resource at a certain rate, though some private companies can sell more. Taxes often pay for plasma.
Storage
Plasma must be stored in strong airtight containers commonly called Plasma Tanks. If not kept in these it will eventually dissipate in a vacuum or combust in the presence of oxygen.
