Laoldis

The largest city of the rock gnomes, Laoldis is the source of much of the mechanical engineering innovation in Pethron. Unfortunately for residents of the city, the gnomic way of innovation is often chaotic and irresponsible. Many discoveries come at the cost of the roof or wall of the inventor's workshop.
With a clunk, the spinning cog swung into contact with the next gear in the drive-train. For a moment the whole building shook as various wheels and cogs crashed through their slack and into motion. As the shudders passed, a wooshing noise began and water began to squirt out of a hundred tiny leaks and joints along the cobbled-together pipe that ran along the centre of the workshop and then spiraled up through the roof.
Kinwing danced with glee and ran to and from, adjusting knobs and pulling levers. "It works! It works! It works!"
The elf, in attendance for the demonstration thought there was rather too much sound of surprise in Kinwing's shouts.
"Will it keep working?" he asked.
"Of course!" shouted Kinwing, pausing for a moment to admire her handiwork.
"Well, it looks to be very good. How do you stop it now?"
Kinwing's expression changed. It was quite apparent to the elf that she had not considered that aspect of the invention yet.
"I think I will take a little walk outside" said the elf, "and probably uphill from the workshop."
If you're in Laoldis and you see someone running, try to keep up.

Demographics

The city is populated mostly by Rock Gnomes, though some of their Forest Gnome brethren join them. It is common for a good number of Elves, Dwarves and Humans to be visiting at any given time. There is often a significant delay between a Rock Gnome having an idea and it being suitable for use in the homeland of any of these people, but they like to keep track of the latest developments.

Government

The city is presided over by the Chief Inventeror at the time.

Infrastructure

Winding streets, often steep, give access to a sprawling town full of odd shaped buildings and wonky-sided workshops.
