The Flying City

The Flying City is not only the first hub of research and knowledge about the new workings of the world, it is also the first city were different races live and work together. The main drive and power hold the research guilds who sit on top of the island and whose goal is it to understand the sudden change for the better of all the races, or so they say. But this much ambition and change for most inhabitants, who are not even used to see most of the other races, creates also a lot of opportunity for much darker ambitions.

Demographics

The city is made up of all intelligent races the world currently holds. The elves and kobolds who invented the skyships and were the first to inhabit one of the biggest flying islands, make up most of the researches guilds and groups in the city. They are the main drive of work, goods and wealth. The other races, who joined the city over time, make up the work force that keeps the city going.

Government

The Flying City is run by a consortium of the biggest research guilds.

Industry & Trade

The city makes most of its money from trading high quality manufactured goods and knowledge about the new workings of the world. They currently also hold the monopoly on skyships.

Infrastructure

The city relies on their fleet of skyships to bring them everything they need to keep the city going. From food to metals and animals everything is brought in from outside. In the city itself their is only room for small industry that is why the underbelly of the island is mostly made out of warehouses.

History

Shortly after the the elves and the kobolds began to discover the properties of the floating material. They began to refit ships for travel on water with the same material and started exploring the area of The Floating Islands. The met each other around one of the biggest pieces of floating rock there and were at first surprised that another race than theirs hat discovered the means to fly. But soon came to an agreement that it would be most beneficial for both races if they would combine their knowledge and had a base operations near the Flying Islands. After years of bringing materials to the island and building, the made the first research station on the top of the Flying City. But because neither the elves nor the kobolds had the man power to do more, they started visiting cities of the other races and showing them their ways of flying in exchange for willing people to help them on their endeavor.

Architecture

From the outside, the city looks as if it were just made out of houses. The general Form of the island looks like two pyramids stuck together. The underbelly is made out of warehouses and industry buildings, which seems to be stuck together at random and are only stopped from falling by good will. At the base of the island are all the docks and the living quarters of most of the workforce and sailors. It is the most crowded and poorest of the districts. In the middle districts, the houses begin to have more space between them and the here is were all shops and manufactures are located. In this part of the city, one can also begin to see how many different races are living here, because the architecture and building materials start to change from house to house. At the top are the enormous research complexes of the research guild and administrative hub for the Flying City.

Geography

The city is build on a giant piece of flying rock, one of the biggest in the area of the Floating Islands. It is surrounded by all kinds of shapes and sizes from other islands.

Natural Resources

The base of the island is made out of the magic material, that gives this and the other islands in the area the ability to float. But to keep the Flying City and it's inhabitants afloat, the mining of the this resource on city grounds has been forbidden.
