The Source of a Deity's Power

There are many theories on how the gods work, and some claim to understand their motivations and urges.
Perhaps they are infinite and all-powerful, requiring nothing of mortals.
Or perhaps they are manifestations of our desires and wants?
What about sacrifice? Maybe mortals with power have it because they have subjugated their lessers?
Some wonder if mortal belief grants power. In dark corners, a few wonder whether they could do this, too. All one needs are subservient believers, and the strength of a god can be yours. But a god wouldn't greet usurpers with open arms...
