In the Great Game, Altir and Denara recognized that many of the created races were not intrinsically moved to respect life or help others. Instead, individuals were selfish and cruel, causing their communities to stall or crumble. Something must be done!
Together, the twins had a plan: instill in their creations the idea of an afterlife where an individual's good or evil actions would place their souls in either eternal paradise or eternal damnation. With their newfound morality and extrinsic motivation, their races outpaced the others economically, technologically, and socially.
The Creator saw this surge in their success and declared that they had cheated in his game. They had cooperated and given their race an unfair advantage.
Feeling quite clever, the Creator punished the twins by creating the very afterlives they had imagined and set them to work maintaining their new realms: Altir in paradise, and Denara in damnation. The twins would care for the lost souls of their siblings' creations until the game ended, and would never see each other again.
