The Unkindness Codex

The ancient leather bound codex, containing every grotesque that has ever awoke. Once a grotesque becomes they wait one full moon until by which time they will have acquired a name. They are escorted to the Book Learners collective, the unkindness perched among Papworth college, the oldest school in Pembina's scholar quarter. The members of this unkindness have learned the written word by watching the Fragile students down below. The name of the new grotesque is then carefully entered in the codex. The new grotesque picks props and a backdrop for their portrait, which is sketched by a grotesque skilled in luminary. If they successfully complete their Coy Hunt, an initiation into their Unkindness, colour is added to their portrait, if they fail the portrait shall remain black and white ink sketch. No further time is put into the failed grotesque. Those that fail in their initiation into their unkindness will have no further energies put into them, leaving their portrait a simple ink sketch.   Rufus saw the portrait of Whatkey. The same horrible monster that he encountered in the fog. The same creature that extorted him for keys in exchange for not ripping his wings off. The beast had no keys tied on ribbons from it's antlers, under one clawed foot lay a limp dead hare. In his hands he cradled almost lovingly a human skull. The moon partially covered by grey clouds and a battle of knights in the background finished the tableau. "It's horrible perfect, isn't it?" xxx said proudly, "I captured Whatkey's evil essence. The light cast from the blood moon was a nice touch." "Yes," Rufus stammered an agreement, "He is terrible." "You can of course pick your own props." Xxx said opening a big trunk. The stuffed dead rabbit lay on top.Rufus was relieved to see the dead rabbit wasn't real.
