Voxport

Demographics

The most diverse city in the known world. There's an old saying, "Nobody's from Voxport. They just all live there" many people who are extremely wealthy live there, and many poor people do too. It's also home to the largest middle class in the Empire, which is a new and exciting idea!

Government

Voxport is run by the Lord Mayor, who is elected along with the emperor, whenever they die. Often the nation the Lord Mayor is from, differs from the nation the Emperor is from, as an attempt to put a check on his power.

Defences

The Imperial United Navy is housed here, as well as the Imperial United Armed Forces. Given the city's existence is based on neutrality however, it does lack in walls and cannons.

Industry & Trade

All artifacts from Avalon must pass through this city to be catalogued by the Imperial Arcane Development and Identification Division (ADID), so it is considered the most important city in the world for trade alone. And due to its massive population, many workshops and industries are starting to appear, some that use artifacts and ideas brought about from Avalon even.

Infrastructure

Long vast stone roads, the largest docks/shipping district in the world, gas lamps lighting the major streets, and even free public transport for citizens, by carriage. Downtown there are many beautiful parks, and the whole of downtown has sewage and running water.

Assets

Most Artifacts come through here, before being sent off to their buyers. Because of this, there is a large grey market on artifacts, as well as rare curios and things from Avalon. There are even tours of the old districts of the city, made to entertain visitors who want to hear of ghosts and spirits. For those braver, there are even Phantasmagoria shows, in multiple theatres throughout the city.

Guilds and Factions

All legal Adventuring guilds are helmed here, in some way. Each of them has a guild hall of sorts, downtown in the city. These are paid for by the Empire, to help keep guilds more organized with less infighting.

History

This city is considered the Free City, as it isn't under the control of any kingdom. After years of all kingdoms fighting over this island, for its strategic location, eventually the emperor declared it to be neutral ground, governed by the Empire and its people, rather than by a specific king. this decision was made almost 1000 years ago, and mostly holds true to this day. Although with the pull back from republican elections in 1452, and the instatement of the Lord Mayor system, one could say it is less ruled by the citizens than ever.

Architecture

Many of the buildings in downtown are made of large, marble stones. The island is naturally largely Marble and chalk white limestone, so many buildings are beautifully carved in a neoclassical style. With some parts of downtown looking almost Parisian.

Geography

It's largely built upon old marble quarries, or on reclaimed land. So underneath there are a lot of old caverns and mines, dug out for the marble the city is now built out of.

Natural Resources

Wood largely has to be imported now, as most of it on the island has been used already. There are tales of peasents chopping down the trees in parks to take the wood, which is highly illegal of course. The city has a strong fishing scene, though it has taken a dive since all the shipping started happening. The whole island has a lot of marble and limestone, and a lot of the peasantry have historically been workers in quarries.
