The Cloudskirter

a sky-ship, built by Lebayel, that uses a dwarf Bell to ride the winds.   Built mostly out of bamboo and wood, the Cloudskirter has developed in a somewhat piecemeal fashion over the years, with its final form standing 25-30m tall and 20m across at its widest point. It is a three-tiered structure:
  • top deck: the main living area of the Cloudskirter, holding Lebayel's cabin (which holds maps and other essential items), a mess, and a few smaller and more secure storage compartments. atop it is an open-air platform with guard-rail, used for navigation and relaxation. 15m across
  • main deck: the broadest part of the ship, 25m across, this holds the storage chambers, which are converted into extra accommodation if required, and also holds the mechanisms to extend the sails and raise/drop the lower deck. the actual bell of the Bell is buried in a room in the heart of this deck.
  • lower deck: slung by stout ropes about 3-4m underneath the main deck - though it can be raised or lowered as required. Around 15m across, it acts as more storage - especially when deployed at its lowest, as the top surface can be used as an open-air area - and also stores the Bell's shortened tentacles as well as its food supply and a water reservoir and head. Finally, it has the land anchor and other docking/landing gear. in risky situations, the lower deck can be raised and secured against the underside of the main deck.
The crew has varied over time, but there are some regular names:

Propulsion

contains a single small (7m) Bell for lifting. this Bell had its tentacles cropped to make it easier to keep captive, and was being grown for slaughter before Lebayel liberated it. It now relies on Lebayel to feed and take care of it. it has deployable sails to allow it to catch and passing winds, which Lebayel is an expert at reading.

Weapons & Armament

  • small armory holding bows, arrows, boarding axes
  • Lebayel's Settler Blunderbuss

Armor and defense

  • deployable bamboo arrow and fire-screens, as well as the ability to attach heavier wooden or metal panels to the outer hull if needed. these aren't generally carried, however.
  • possibly a lead damping-core for defense against manipulated-essence attacks.

Communication Tools & Systems

  • mirror for sun-signalling
  • supply of paper, ink, and quills - though no Paired Pages or similar.

Sensors

  • observation deck
  • smoke, sand, and windsock used to determine wind speed and direction above, below, and at altitude respectively
  • lodestone for bearings.

Additional & auxiliary systems

  • sufficient supplies and tools for considerable repair
  • large water cistern on the lower deck
  • the head is essentially a bench with a hole in it - a very long drop indeed.
  • land-anchor, mooring ropes, and other landing-gear.
