The First Sin

The First Sin is the first Sin to swear their loyalty to the next ruler. They are the only ones to earn the title of The First Sin and only one can earn that title for each ruler. The First Sin is given the King’s Marking to symbolize the change in rulings. The mark is applied to the Sin with the most marks and largest achievements to the city. Because the conditions to even earn the title is so tight, Sins are constantly training and working to be the best so they can be the next crown's dagger.

“This,” Echo handed it to Skarlet, “Is a Sin Stylus. It’s what’s used for our marks.”
‘Why do you need this?’
Echo pushed the quill closer to Skarlet when she tried to give it back, “I have a favor to ask you. Will you apply my last mark?”
‘What?’ Skarlet pulled a confused face, “Don’t you have all the marks a Sin can get?’
Echo nodded, then shook her head, “It’s a little more complicated. I have all the marks any Sin can get, but one Sin can receive seven marks. That’s what I put my request in for. It’s called the King’s Marking. It’s applied to the back of the neck at the nape. It is given to only one Sin each generation.”
‘Why?’ Skarlet asked turning the stylus in her hand, ‘What does it represent?’
Echo took a deep breath, “It marks the new ruler of the kingdom. The first Sin to swear their loyalty to the next ruler is given the King’s Marking. It marks the shift in alliance, all Sins will bow to you and answer to no one else.”
Skarlet mouth fell open. Echo continued when Skarlet didn’t reply, “Arthur will soon insist that the Sins allow him to apply the King’s Marking to ensure our loyalty. Since I have the most markings as a Sin, I would be the one required to have the mark. I do not want to bow to Arthur. From this day forward, I want to bow to you as the next queen of this kingdom.”
‘I don’t know,’ Skarlet spun the stylus in her hands, ‘I hadn’t even thought about what I would do once this was over. I just assumed the Red King would return and take the throne again.’
Echo shifted and knelt in front of Skarlet. She bowed her head, “Please, Audette. This is the greatest honor of a Sin. I wish to wear my mark with pride, not with shame if I were to be given Arthur’s mark.”
Skarlet looked at Echo, ‘I want to ask one question first.’
Echo hung her head, “Very well. I will answer it honestly.”
“Why is being a Sin Sister so important to you?”
Echo straightened, startled by the question. That was not what she was expecting. Echo may not have expected it, but she had an answer. “I ask myself every day. When I reunited with you in Feuerkas, I was just starting to be able to answer that question. Being a Sin is important to me because helping others is important to me. It’s my livelihood. In the missions I go on I face so many of the most evils in the kingdom, and to be able to see the smiles of children and the sun rising in the morning, after all, that pain is why being a Sin is so important to me.”
