Founding of the Dwelven Calendar

After the high elves began to move into the city of Vaerskald, the elders agreed that there needed to be some way to keep track of time.

It is an old high elven tradition to keep track of the phases of the moon, as well as the seasons. Previous elven calendars had months that lasted an entire cycle of seasons. To the dwarves, this form of calendar was far too long for the use of the common people. After many years of debate, the dwarves and elves settled on creating the dwelven calendar which had 5 months, and a total of 365 days. History keepers placed the founding date on the thirtieth year, marking the dwarven arrival as year zero.
