Flamestone
Part of the Kingdom's prowess stems from their extensive use of flamestone, both in their architecture and as talismans worn by highborn mages. It is one of the few materials that has been discovered that creates and maintains its own magical field independent of human interference. This field can be used by mages of the correct aspect to amplify their own power, or to use magic without exhausting their own reserves. This increasingly rare material is found near the edge of the Blasted Lands, and it has recently been theorized that the material either caused the desert-like climate of the area, or is the result of whatever caused the formation of the Great Chasm separating the Blasted Lands and the Kingdom proper. The sale of the material to the king and nobles has caused several cities to sprout up in and around the Great Chasm and given the area significant economic and political power. It's use in architecture and monument building has been mostly to disguise its use by the mages protecting the city as the blessing of a fire deity, as the power inherent in the material is still usable regardless of its shape. The rapid expansion of the Kingdom has increased demand for the material at a rate much faster than it can be supplied, and the veins discovered in and around the Great Chasm are starting to yield less and less of the material. These shortages are starting to cause problems for the cities that sprung up around its production, many starting to turn to alternative industries as the mineral becomes harder and harder to find and extract. The rapid consumption of flamestone isn't just because of its use in the protection of cities in the Kingdom, but in magical research at the colleges established in the kingdom. The availability of the material has provided a massive leap in understanding of magics using the material, but the information gain is deep and narrow. As a result, many of the fire aspected mages coming out of the colleges are dependent on the material for most more difficult magic, and are severely hampered when they don't have access to it.
