Fantasy-based world with heavy magic elements. The magic, however, is still in the early stages of discovery. This has led to the rapid rise, expansion, and fall of warlords and kingdoms. There has also been a recent leap in magical study, but only for specific types of magic. War is a constant, but more a generational affair, rather than a continuous clash. New wars start every 10-20 years, go on for a few years, but then sputter out as the fledgling countries weak economies can't keep up with the ever growing pit of warfare expenses. In the last few generations, mercenary companies rose to prominence, fueling the expansion of a (for now) dominant kingdom that has remained established for nearly 60 years, the longest lasting kingdom in recent memory. This allowed the establishment of magical academies that have been fueling the recent advances, but their focus on specific magics have seen a steadily growing power difference between them and the other kingdoms and warlord-ruled territories around them.
