Kogan Hymen Character in Orya | World Anvil

Kogan Hymen

Kogan Hymen was born into a fairly mundane family. His parent's magical abilities were barely enough to make a book float a few inches off of the ground. They lived simple lives as scribes, writing down tales and copying books for a living. They raised Kogan to the best of their ability, treating him well and teaching him how to make books. They bought him his first set of tools when he was 8, and he was a natural, but he felt like he wanted to do something else with his life.   Kogan's magical abilities began showing themselves when he was 13 - an age where mages' powers typically began to appear. The first appearance of his magic was during a small conflict at school where he sent a few kids flying away from him on accident. This caused his parents to take special note of him, as his abilities were exceptional, especially for someone borne to low-magic parents. As his powers began to develop further, he was taken out of public schools and sent to a school for mage trainees.    During his time at this school, Kogan was taught to control and harness the magic energy within him, and discovered that he had an exceptional aptitude for Destruction Magic. By the time he was just 16, he amazed his professors by showing that he was capable of casting third level spells. After this, he immediately graduated and was recommended for a school specializing in high-level Destruction Magic, and he began taking Expert-level Destruction courses shortly thereafter.    After a short 12 years, Kogan was able to cast seventh level Destruction spells. This was 20 years of magical knowledge and prowess condensed into just over half of that time, which was incredibly rare to see. At just 28, Kogan was ready to venture into Master-level Destruction spells, and he passed the test to get into the next school with flying colors.    Kogan trained both his mind and his body, and worked vigorously on harnessing and perfecting his magical prowess. He studied rigorously, and increased his knowledge of magic very quickly. One day, however, two years into his study, Kogan discovered a tome on the Ancient Magic of Unmaker Magic. He began learning of this incredibly powerful form of magic that very few had ever been able to use, let alone master, and it intrigued him.    He wanted to know more, and he began looking deeper into the history of Unmaker Magic. He collected every tome he could that contained even faint rumors of Unmaker Magic and what it could do, and soon he began researching Zerenthe himself. The more he learned about Zerenthe, the more he began to sympathize with him, and soon he founded a religion dedicated to worshiping Zerenthe and recognizing him as the Greater God he truly was.    This was looked down upon by most of society, as Zerenthe was said to be a great destroyer that wanted the end of all of creation. He amassed a small following, and constructed a temple deep in the magical forests that the Chrysali called their home. There he worshiped Zerenthe, singing his praises and praying to him regularly. After over 300 years of this, Zerenthe spoke back to him, instructing him to carry out Zerenthe's will, and giving him the power to do so. At that moment, Kogan was given mastery over Unmaker Magic, and became Kogan the Unmaker.    Kogan began research into how he could carry out Zerenthe's will, and recognized right away he would need a way to amplify his magic to a planetary scale. He had a plan to use Unmaker Magic to unmake magic itself, and thus effectively erase Orya from existence. This plan, along with further research, would lead him to an Augmoreous. He began to search for an Augmoreous, leading a trail of Destruction and Unmaking in his wake, depending on how merciful he was feeling. His actions caused him to draw the ire and attention of many important magical figures, and a small group of heroes that would eventually be his downfall.   Kogan's plan was set to take place on an important magical day in Orya, the 548th day of a leap year, to draw as much magical power as he could into the Augmoreous he was using, as well as to expose as much magical energy as possible to the nullification of his Unmaker Magic. This plan, however, was stopped by the aforementioned group of heroes, but his exact fate is unknown. All that is known is that Kogan was never seen again after that fateful encounter. One short year later, the Council of Archmages put heavy restrictions on the use of Augmoreouses, and ordered the destruction of many of them. The worship of Zerenthe was also made into a criminal act in every society, and Unmaker Magic was kept under very tight restrictions by the Council of Archmages.
