Wishes

"You promised me wealth beyond my wildest dreams."   "And wealth you have, master."   "You have sired me one thousand sons, and daughters! I wanted gold, and treasure to trade in the city!"   "Is there a wealth greater than to reer the discples of your own lions? Wealth greater than to teach, cloth, bath, and feed the next generation?"
— Maha'Rah, Djinn of the Winds
The power of the Djinn is enormous. They are masters of the fulfilment of mortal desire, and their wishes are not things to be squandered, but even the greatest of wordsmiths has found themselves at the mercy of such beings who created the very air which fill the lungs of such wishes. Long have the Djinn dealt with mortalkind, and they take a certain pleasure in twisting wishes in a way that humbles those who make them.   When dealing with the truly awesome power of a Djinn, one must remember that they are incredibly spiteful beings who pride themselves on their ability to reshape the world. The magic that they wield in function comes not from them, but from the belief in the wish itself. A concept which is harder to understand in practice than in principle.   A wish that benefits the many, and the masses, is likely to be made by order of its words because the Djinn is bound to fulfill it in the manner of which all those the wish affects perceive it, but a wish made for the benefit of the individual can be bent in nearly any way imaginable. No matter how carefully worded a selfish wish may be, it's conditions can always be stretched to match its definition.   Djinn, as a species of elementals, rank one another by the wishes they fulfill. There is a certain marker for beguiling a mortal which they always take pride in, but fulfilling a truly great wish upon which their name, and power will be remembered for to the benefit of the masses is many ranks above these petty gestures.

Wishes of Worlds Lost

Wishes are terribly powerful conduits of ancient magic far more embedded in the powers of the Endless, than in the whims of beings of the outer planes. Djinn are, in eccence, hope made manifest. Potential, and possibility given form. They may be sentient beings, and may have some elemental quality to their person, but their purpose is to fulfill dreams of a different world. Or rather, to recreate worlds that once were. Perhaps, at best, they were the Endless of those worlds lost, but they're such prideful creatures that one would think they'd mention it from time to time if they were.   When the heaven-dragons struck Orr, and created the Cataclysm that splintered time and space, millions of different timelines, and universes were created in that moment. Djinn are the memories of the worlds that once were. The possibilities of actions that once transpired. Every wish that could or ever will be made is, in truth, just one of those innumerable worlds being drawn into our own prime material plane and combined into a hideous amalgan. A collision of non-consecutive histories. Thus the interventions of wishes in the world of Orr is a monstrous, hybird reality.   A sentiment that, unfortunately, those who are given the rare opportunity to make true wishes do not appreciate.

Conditions

Perhaps it should come as no surprise to those aware of the Djinn's temperament, and how their 'magic' manifests that a wish might be shifted. Perhaps no world manifested to fulfill the conditions of the wish, or perhaps the Djinn simply choose one variation over the other. Regardless, as the final arbiters of the wish, they are ulimately responsible for fulfilling its conditions, but they are bound to certain constraints.
  • A wish can never directly harm the one whom made it.
  • A wish can never directly alter the mind, or personality of another (such as making them fall in love, or giving up a passion)
  • A wish can never directly harm or destroy a person or object.
  • A wish can never undo an event of the past.
  • A wish can never predetermine a future event (such as wishing for the outcome of a race)
  • A wish can only be undone by another wish.
  • "The talent of the Djinn, who can reorder the very universe with a snap of their fingers, comes not from some exterior power of the world, but from mortal belief in the same vein that such things empower and gave birth to the Endless. A wish is a God made manifest in a moment. A desire so strong, and so sudden, that it can rewrite history and creation. An ambition that the Djinn exalt. As much as they would love us to believe they are responsible for this 'magic', in truth all they do is simply magnify the power that always dwelled within us to begin with.

I really love this article, but remember to only use free-to-use images! It seems you have used a couple of pictures that, while technically freely downloadable from the internet, are the intellectual properties of various artists who have not explicitly stated that they're free-to-use. Please don't take this as an attack, I'm just trying to give you a heads-up so you don't get DQ'd from WorldEmber. '^^

Love this article. Reminds me of Last Wish of Sapkowski (and other stories with djinni). The opening quote is great
