Shadows of the First Watcher

Among the Bivré, the First Watcher is the most respected religious figure of their kind. They are believed to have a divine connection to That Which Watches Over Us (or simply the "Watcher"), their god of the moons. Since it is believed that the Watcher is in constant conflict with the sun god That Which Ravages Us (the "Ravager"), the watcher clergy created a group of guards to protect the First Watcher from harm.
The term "Shadows of the First Watcher" refers to the fact that that a shadow is an area of darkness cast by an object's interaction with light. Thus, when the power of light magic touches and threatens a watcher, a protective shadow will always be there to follow. Composed of Darkweavers, the unit of bodyguards consists of a varying number of protectors; the clergy do not wish their enemies to know how many guards the First Watcher has at any given time. The leader of the unit, however, is in close proximity to the First Watcher wherever they go, and bares the title of First Shadow.
The magical abilities of a Darkweaver are always required to become a Shadow, but they are also rigorously trained in a variety of other combat techniques. An affinity for being observant is the foremost quality looked for in a potential Shadow, as one cannot combat a threat that goes unnoticed. Shadows are particularly trained in methods of combating sunbeasts and Brightcasters, as those are the enemies that are most likely to purposely seek out the First Watcher.
To be a Shadow is a highly dangerous calling, yet most Darklings consider it just that: a calling. Each Shadow is is anointed by the First Watcher, and swears to protect them from all threats even unto death. Many Shadows have fallen pray to sunbeasts in the past that have broken through the canopy of the forest, and they have done battle with the demon Brightcasters who seek to "bring the Darklings to safety."
