Aeltheria

The Primal Powers of the Universe

"Magic is neither good nor evil. It is the voice of worlds, an echo of Aenor's breath and Nyssara's dance."
— Archmage Elyndra of Ellanoris
Magic, the lifeblood of the universe, is a gift born from the divine fragments left by Aenor and Nyssara during their cosmic duel. Also known as Aeltheria due to the Grimoire of Aeltheris, first Grimmoire of magic, it permeates all existence but is perceived differently across realms, as a source of creation, destruction, and transformation. Across ages, magic has shaped civilizations, inspired the greatest works, and unleashed the most terrifying catastrophes.

The Origin and Nature of Magic

The Legacy of Aenor and Nyssara

When Aenor and Nyssara clashed for dominion over the universe, their essences scattered into the void. These shards of power infused matter, birthing magic. Each form of magic embodies duality: creation, reflecting Aenor, and destruction, mirroring Nyssara. Thus, magic is not inherently moral but reflects the intentions of its wielder.

Magical Currents

Magic flows through the universe like an endless river. These "magical currents" converge around energy nexuses, often located in ancient or sacred sites. These nexuses, though powerful, are also unstable and perilous, serving as a reminder that magic demands absolute respect and discipline.

Magical Practices

Spells and Incantations

For many peoples, such as humans and elves, magic is a meticulous art. Spells and incantations require years of study and discipline. A mage combines precise movements, drawn circles, and potent words to channel magical flows. Mastery demands perfect balance between mental focus and physical preparation, as any mistake can result in catastrophic effects.

Studies and Schools of Magic

Magical academies are pivotal in the education of mystical arts. These institutions teach various disciplines, allowing students to specialize in fields like pyromancy or hydromancy. Advanced training occurs within magical circles, where students learn to manipulate complex energies and create original spells. The most talented gain access to ancient secrets preserved in ancestral grimoires.

Artifacts of Power

Many mages rely on crystals, talismans, or runes to amplify their abilities. These magical objects act as catalysts, enabling individuals to compensate for limited affinity or achieve otherwise unattainable power levels. Runes, meticulously inscribed, anchor magic in artifacts, creating enchanted weapons and tools.

The Magic of Peoples: Diversity and Specificity

Elven Magic: The Song of Nature

Under the guidance of Sylvana, the elves have mastered the art of channeling magical flows. Their sophisticated incantations and precise gestures create destructive flames, water shields, or devastating gusts. Rooted in centuries-old traditions passed from master to apprentice, elves are among the most learned in conventional magical arts.

Dwarven Magic: Runes of Fire and Iron

Unlike elves, dwarves view magic as a tool, an extension of their craftsmanship. Each rune carved into metal is a symbol of power, crafted with precision and care. These runes imbue weapons and armor with unique properties, enhancing durability, lightness, or magical damage.   Dwarves also create enchanted artifacts, such as eternal lanterns or mechanical portals powered by magical crystals. Their pragmatic approach to magic highlights their ingenuity and determination to harness mystical forces for practical needs.

Étherian Magic: A Divine Fusion

Éthérians possess an instinctive and unique magic. Each individual is born with an affinity for a specific element, such as fire, water, air, or earth. Unlike other peoples, Étherians do not acquire magic through learning but by exploring their natural bond with the universe. Their magic often manifests instinctively, flowing as an extension of their being.   The most powerful among them, known as Avatars, can temporarily embody elemental manifestations, merging their essence with their element.

Sor'naath: The Dark Art of the Dark Elves

Sor'naath, a dark magic tied to Nyssara, is the domain of the dark elves. They view magic as a means to assert dominance, using occult rituals to bend the forces of shadows to their will. Sor'naath is both terrifying and fascinating, capable of obliterating armies, resurrecting the dead, or cursing entire bloodlines.   Specters—ethereal entities born from Nyssara's will—are the most fearsome weapons of this magic. These tormented beings, neither alive nor dead, obey their summoners and feed on the emotions and life forces of their victims. Sor'naath also corrupts nature, turning fertile lands into barren deserts or innocent creatures into monsters.

Limits and Consequences of Magic

Magical Exhaustion

Magic, regardless of its form, demands energy. Mages who overextend themselves risk severe physical and mental exhaustion. For Étherians, excessive use of their element can cause internal injuries or temporary loss of control, endangering their surroundings.

The Consequences of Dark Magic Use

Dark magic corrupts the user's soul and body. Abusing these powers can result in physical transformations, monstrous traits, or loss of humanity. This process often leads to mental instability, driving individuals to irrational violence.   Dark magic disrupts the natural balance of elements, potentially causing environmental catastrophes. Areas tainted by dark magic become desolate lands where malevolent creatures thrive, nourished by the dark energy.

The Evolution and Future of Magic

Despite its diversity, magic remains a universal force tied to the histories and beliefs of peoples. While some seek to harmonize it with nature, others manipulate it for their ambitions. Yet, it remains a manifestation of the delicate balance between creation and destruction, reminding all that reckless use could one day consume the universe itself.
