Lilith Brand

Lilith Arlo Brand

Lilith is one of the main characters in ORCHESTRA. Her story is a darkly ironic one about ideological hypocrisy, as she starts out a weak and submissive woman and ends up becoming a very strong and empowered by adopting the morals and ideals of that which she fights against.

Character Arc

Lilith's story is of a woman who overcomes her internalised weakness that toxic men in her life have put upon her and becomes strong and independant, while at the same time being a villain who uses this empowerment to perpetuate a hateful ideology. At the beginning of the first book she is quite a weak character. She is Cameron's girlfriend, and only joins the organisation because he did. Theirs is an extremely toxic relationship, with Cameron being quite abusive but Lilith having internalised the abuse and not wanting to leave him. As such, she's quite passive for a lot of the first book. Other characters try to convince her to leave Cameron and be her own person, during which there are hints that she really could be more than this, but these never really succeed.   In the second book Lilith is the focus, and she changes dramatically. She and Cameron are assigned to hunt the vampires in the city, during which time their relationship only becomes worse. While Cameron consistenly fails, Lilith turns out to be suprisingly good at the job, which fires Cameron's insecurity and makes him abuse her more. Lilith however has discovered she quite enjoys succeeding and feeling capable, so begins to push back on Cameron. At the same time, the cunning vampires see Lilith as someone to potentially recruit, with the head vampire even sympathising with her as she had a similar story before she obtained the power she did. Eventually, during a critical moment in a mission, she refuses to follow Cameron's foolish overextension, which saves her life while Cameron nearly dies and is sent away as punishment. After this she comes into her own and takes a strong lead, having come to greatly like who she is now. The vampires meanwhile see this as an opportunity to get her to join them, by insisting they don't have to be enemies and offering her more of the power she has come to like. But here Lilith demonstrates her myopic hypocrisy, as she takes their ideals and philosophy onboard but at the same time refuses to accept they're anything alike and still tries to kill them. This betrayal succeeds, and is responsible for the vampire's downfall at the end of the book.
